ODID MATTHEW RESPONSE
Over the next year, our organization is planning to bring mobile clinics to towns in the South and in the West, that have endured the wrath of hurricane Matthew. As a 501 c3, ODID(Organization for the Development Integral of Dondon) has amassed the expertise and experience in bringing care to rural areas of the commune in Dondon in the North of Haiti since 2014. For the past two years, thousands of people have been seen by our volunteer medical staff. Our hope is to help mitigage the potential of a public health crisis related to hurricane Matthew.
Our staff is experienced in providing care and effective care integrated with health education in low-resource environments. Our lead physician has provided care in the mountains of Haiti and in the Dominican Republic. The team has become very apt in diagnosing, treating, and educating under his leadership. Our team combines a group of well-trained professionals: doctors, nurses, and nurse practioners based in Haiti and in the US.
We were lucky that the North was not impacted by Matthew and our town was not touched. We are however heart-broken by the misery that this disaster left in so many places in the South. People are homeless and have no access to food, clean water and sanitation. While the number of people killed have reportedly reached the thousand mark, the poor conditions in the aftermath will create more health risks for a long time to come.
These funds will be used to help ODID lend the expertise of its health team to conduct health clinics, purchase medications, distribute first AID kits and provide care and health education to the victims of the hurricane.
ODID has partnered with the Rotary of Leogane to plan the first of such clinics in Leogane on November 5-6, 2016.
