1 in 36,000 people will be effected by von Hipple-Lindau syndrome, experiencing the formation of tumors in many different parts of the body. Meet Sonia. She is 1 in 36,000, and to her family, she is everything.

Sonia was diagnosed with von Hipple-Lindau syndrome in 2012. In 2014, diagnostic testing showed tumor growth, which was in fact cancerous, on her left kidney. Shortly after, the kidney was partially removed.  For a brief time, it was thought that Sonia would be ok…

And that time was brief.

In 2016, Sonia had her entire right Kidney removed- it was loaded with tumors and cancer, leaving her body to fight with only ½ a kidney. On Monday, February 6, that ½ will now be removed, leaving Sonia to be put on a donor list, in urgent need to receive a healthy kidney.  A port now has been installed so that she can receive dialysis three times a week, a clinical way of cleaning the blood, trying to make up for the loss of these vital organs.

Most recently, an MRI revealed that Sonia has a tumor on her spinal cord at the base of the brain. During the holiday season, Sonia went for her surgery and had the tumor removed.  This time, thankfully, the tumor was deemed as benign. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for tumors to continue to develop as this disease progresses, and there is no way to predict or prevent their next organ target.

This 1 in 36,000 has been married to her husband Jorge, a former US Marine, for 19 years. They have a 16-year-old son who is really great at football, and before getting sick, watching their son play was one of their simplest pleasures. Over these last few years, Jorge left his job and home behind in 2012 to seek a higher quality of treatment for his wife, moving his family to Fort Worth, so that she can receive the best care at a better medical facility located in Dallas. 25 days into the New Year, Jorge is facing insurmountable debt, and looking at many more future bills to pour in, as testing, procedures and around the clock care become a necessity. Jorge is working 7 days a week and doing everything he can, but like Sonia, he is only one person.

I have never met Sonia in person or for a matter of fact, I have never met her Husband Jorge.  However, for the past several years I have spoken with Jorge daily from over 1600 miles away.  You see, I am a Security Manager and Jorge is 1 in my team of 70 Officers— a Site Supervisor at one of the sites that I oversee in Texas, where the DeAnda family resides.   I don’t know about you, but when you speak to someone daily, you tend to develop a relationship with that person.  I want to help him, but I don’t know how.  Jorge and his family are hardworking and good people and most of all they deserve a chance.  If I had won the lotto – this wouldn’t be an issue.  I would give it all to them.

Please help me help them.  Financially I am donating whatever I can whenever I can.  If you could help it would greatly be appreciated.
