You may have heard that the Dolphin Discovery Centre has just recieved major funding, however there is some confusion about all the money that just got announced. That money is specifically to cover the costs of building, not operations. Therefore we are still needing to come up with the money for the boat engine else where and that is why we have developed this gofundme account and why we continue to fundraise and run campaigns in order to be able to cover this huge cost.
The Dolphin Discovery Centre in Bunbury, Western Australia partners with Murdoch University to run a research program based on the wild dolphins of Koombana Bay and its surrounding waters. Unfortunately our research boat engine has failed after extended use and we are desperate to replace it so we can continue our research programs. As a not for profit community organisation we struggle to maintain our programs and simply do not have the money to replace our engine without your support.
Our research program has been running for ten years with its main focus being a Dolphin Population Viability Analysis. This highly regarded research program is looking into a range of issues with the aim of understanding seasonal movement patterns, genetics and ultimately the viability of the Bunbury dolphins and the environment that sustains them. The Koombana Bay resident dolphin population totals about 50 animals with another 100+ dolphins visiting throughout the year, particularly during the summer.
Our research supports our education programs and our work towards the conserving of these amazing mammals.
In order for the volunteers, students and staff to continue their research, we need the boat for undertaking research transects across our marine area. A new installed engine will cost cost a scary $16,000 and we have secured $6,000 but do not have the additional $10,000 we need to be able to continue our research program.
