Mandy's Story

Donation protected
One year ago, Mandy was a normal 18 year old girl looking forward to becoming a collegiate student athlete. She had everything going for her until her world quite literally started falling apart.

Mandy was diagnosed with a rare connective tissue disorder that causes her body tissues to fall apart and puts her through a great deal of pain. Last summer she suffered a vertebral artery dissection in which the artery connecting to her brain began to dissolve, causing two large strokes and numerous other neurological episodes. These episodes left her with amnesia in which she was unable to remember her parents and her siblings-those who she loves the most. Mandy’s connective tissue disorder also affects her heart, causing her heart rate to be two to three times what it should be. A division 1 basketball commit cannot walk for 5 minutes straight without her heart rate reaching 200 because of this awful disease.

Mandy’s latest battle is with her teeth. The enamel on her teeth (connective tissue) has deteriorated and her teeth are crumbling out of her mouth. The doctors have told us that she needs a full set of dental implants or else her jaw will be the next thing to waste away.

Mandy’s medical expenses, even with insurance, are tens of thousands of dollars. Because her disorder is so rare we travel five hours one way to see her doctors. This usually requires us to stay in Cleveland as well. Now, to replace her teeth so she can eat, nourish herself to heal and survive, and to prevent infections which can lead to more life-threatening heart problems, it will cost us $45,000 above and beyond any insurance payments. Please please help her in any way you can.
