Story by Gayle Dunn - "In the 2002 Bali Bombings my 18 year old son Craig Dunn and his friend Danny Lewis were killed along with 200 other people. This event not only affected my family and the Lewis family, but many people including the young of Ulladulla (New South Wales, Australia) who fundraised and wanted the money to go towards a living memorial that would deliver community activities and support, whilst always remembering those whose lives were taken too early.
In 2003 we founded the Dunn & Lewis Youth Development Foundation Limited, a Harm Prevention Charity and began fundraising and working continuously to give the youth of our town new opportunities.
The heart of this project is the Dunn & Lewis Centre in Ulladulla, which opens up opportunities for the young adults and children that weren’t there before the centre. After nearly 15 years of continuous fundraising and working with community groups, we now have Ten Pin Bowling, a Kiosk, a Memorial Wall for the victims of the Bali Bombings, Classrooms, an Art Gallery exhibiting art from local artists, a Lounge Area with WiFi displaying local minerals and artefacts, a Tourist Information Centre and Technology Hub as well as an outdoor area with a Vegetable garden.
We provide many youth and community activities, programs, offer work experience and traineeships, support groups and over 60,000 people use the centre yearly.
In 2016 the construction of the (so far) unused side of the building was completed, which in the near future will be a fully functioning auditorium, with a seating capacity for over 1000 people, as well as a Sports Complex; both which are much needed in Ulladulla.
I have worked 7 days a week on this project for the last 14 years and I would love to be able to state a date of completion to the next child who asks me "When can we use our sports centre?"; for years I have always said "October" but have never been able to give the year.
We are now fundraising again to complete the Stage, Court Sports Floor, Gymnastics facility and Rock Climbing Wall to be able to open up the Sports Complex for use by the community.
