Help Bill write the DIRESTA book

My name is Bill, and I make things.
I run a site called One Car Workshop , but I am best known as a freelance writer for Make: Magazine. I am also one of the hosts of the Makers' Hustle podcast , where we talk about the business side of being a full-time maker.
Right now, I am working with Jimmy DiResta on a book about his life and philosophy. We have been working together since late May and I have completed about four chapters' worth of material already. I have been working on the book every second I have to spare.
I am treating this like a job. I am not going to NYC so I can hang out and relax with Jimmy DiResta. This is not a vacation. I will be 100% focused on getting valuable content for the book. As part of the book, I need to spend some time with Jimmy in his element -- both his workshop on the Lower East Side and his property upstate (where he plans to build Maker Mecca, a collaborative workshop and instructional space). I intend to spend 5-7 days in New York with Jimmy, getting a look at what his day-to-day life is like when the cameras aren't on.
Here's the catch. I need to make the trip in order to write the book, and I can't shop the book to publishers until I make the trip -- so the money for the trip has to come from somewhere else. That's where you come in.
I am convinced that this book is my Big Opportunity. This is the work that will establish my career as a writer and Maker, and I would do anything to make it happen. My wife and I have already shifted into Austerity Mode and have eliminated all of the non-essentials from our life, but since I lost my job in December she has been supporting both of us. She wants this to happen and is more than willing to contribute, but the two of us can't do it alone.
We've crunched the numbers. Assuming I eat cheaply and couch surf as much as possible, I can make this trip happen with $1,000. My wife and I can pitch in $400 of that if we scrimp and save as hard as we can, which we fully intend to do. That means I need $600 from you lovely people. Anything in excess of $600 will help me to reduce the burden on my lovely, understanding, and entirely too generous wife, Elaine.
Your support will allow me to write the book properly, including all of the detail and depth that I know you would want to read. It will also allow me to make a series of videos about the trip (which will hopefully overlap with World Maker Faire in NYC as well) for everyone's enjoyment.
Any funds not used during the trip will be "paid forward" to another Maker in need. I know how to travel cheaply and I will keep an account of every dollar spent. I take my responsibility as a writer seriously and I will treat any money donated with the utmost respect.
