Dilyn's #HomemadeScholarship

Hello! As most of you may know, my name is Dilyn Corner and I'm studying at Michigan State University. This is my fifth and final year here at MSU pursuing two degrees, a BA in Mathematics and a BA in Philosophy. However, some rather bad financial news has been given to me from our Financial Aid Office: they have run out of financial aid money! As a result, I will have to drop one of my degrees. That is, unless, I can come up with the money to cover my tuition bill. That is where you come in!

I originally started at MSU studying Advanced Mathematics, Physics, and Astrophysics with a small amount of financial support from the university (through small federal loans) and a small scholarship that lasted until my fourth year. I supported myself by working at MSU's Mathematics Learning Centers as a tutor and eventually worked my way up to supervising one of the center's, helping dozens of tutors help students learn math every day. Over time, I saw myself falling more and more in love with math, eventually applying to become an undergraduate learning assistant in the Mathematics Department, teaching classes from College Algebra and Precalculus to Calculus I and II.

Then, halfway through my third year at MSU, one of my friends introduced me to academic philosophy. I immediately enjoyed it. Because of my background in mathematics, I found myself engrossed in philosophy of mathematics, eventually going on to study classical and nonclassical logics and even being asked by a professor to work on a project with him, which I presented at the Science of Team Science conference in May earlier this year (we are also working on a paper to publish on our results). In addition to all this, I aimed to pursue a senior thesis in the Philosophy Department attempting to use the two fields I had devoted my last five years of life to solve a series of problems I had become aware of during my studies. This all has eventually led to dreams of an advanced degree in Philosophy, which is where I currently am right now. However, I am now at an impasse: with my current financial troubles and the Offce of Financial Aid unable to offer any real solution, I can only finish one of the two degrees. With the prospect of graduate studies in Philosophy and the fact that it would be cheaper by 3 credit hours to finish that degree, it has come to my attention that the most feasible option is dropping my Mathematics degree. However, given that I have spent three years of my life in pursuit of it and, indeed, built an entire undergraduate career out of it, I am not willing to part with it so easily.

What I need to reach my goal of graduating with both degrees is $3,500. It isn't a small amount of money by any stretch (it's more than I make in three months, after all), but all of this money would go towards my tuition bill at MSU. I would need to reach this goal by the end of finals week (December 15th) before I get unenrolled from the university. Any amount helps, and feel free to spread the word!
