My name is Dillon Turner and I’m a career barista. At the age of 16, I was hired by a good friend of mine at Starbucks. It was a rare opportunity to get into a barista job at such a young age. Although Starbucks wasn’t my career, I did fall in love with coffee, crafting espresso beverages, and giving customers a positive experience to start their day off right. Now at age 31, I have worked in the specialty coffee industry for 15 years in a variety of coffee settings. These positions include independent coffee shops in Eugene, Oregon, a Luxury Hotel in Downtown Portland and managing one of Portland’s favorite coffee spots, See See Coffee & Motorcycles. Some of the highlights of the last 15 years in coffee include winning the Best Barista Award in Eugene, Oregon 2 years in a row as voted by the readers of the local newspaper, making coffee for celebrities and professional athletes at the Hotel, and creating mobile coffee shops for See See in Tampa, Florida, and for The One Motorcycle Show.
Now after 15 years of training, I’m striking out on my own to start Dill’s Coffee Stop, a gourmet coffee drive-thru. Why “Dill’s?” Well, with the name “Dillon” people have called me all sort of “Dill” nicknames and to me the name Dill’s sounds fun and inviting, not pretentious and stuck up. If you know me, I strive to make people feel comfortable with their coffee experience through quality product and genuine customer service.
What will Dill’s provide? Gourmet coffee like you would get in a high end coffee shop in drive-thu form, fresh baked pastries, cookies, and hot breakfast food. Our goal at Dill’s is to give you a gourmet coffee and breakfast experience in a timely manner so you can get a great start to your work or play day.
We bought a drive thru this last month in Gresham, Oregon that we got for a great price but it needs a little work. We’ve been putting in the sweat hours to make it our own personal style, but we could use your help to get the equipment updated. It has an older small espresso machine that needs to be replaced with a more modern high volume machine. We lack the capability to make ice, so a small ice machine is needed, and we would like the capability to bake some fresh goodies to go with your coffee and to do so we would like to install a small convection oven. Other improvements include a refrigerator, an extra water tank and the ability to be able to hire an employee to make our speed of service quick.
It has always been my dream to own my own coffee business, now I am making that happen. Part of my dream to make a coffee business is also to inspire and train the next generation of baristas. At Dill’s, I want to create a barista apprenticeship program called “Little Dills.” I was fortunate enough to get a barista job in High School, but for many kids its tricky and very competitive to break into the coffee world. This is a career that I have always enjoyed and been able to find work in no matter where I lived, and it is my dream to get more young people interested in this career path. With the Little Dill’s program, two High School students will be selected at the beginning of each summer to train, work and experience the coffee world at our coffee Drive Thru. A unique experience and definitely a cool summer job for two lucky students.
