Portage-Summit Diaper Bank was established in 2014 to help solve the very serious problem of diaper need in NE Ohio.
Why is diaper need an issue? Because one out of three low-income families struggle to afford diapers. Food stamps and WIC do not pay for diapers. The National Diaper Bank Network found that mother's stressed more over diaper need than food need. They also found cases where moms would let wet diapers dry out and then reuse them to stretch their supply.
Without access to clean, dry diapers, babies can suffer serious and severe diaper rash, get urinary tract infections, and yeast or staph infections.
Since October, 2014, Portage-Summit Diaper Bank has provided over 120,000 diapers to babies in need. On average, 300-650 babies are helped each month. Diapers are repackaged into packs of 20 and distrubuted at no charge to eight partnered social services agencies in Portage and Summit Counties. Portage-Summit Diaper Bank is a 501(c)(3) charity.
I am the founder and sole administrator for the Portage-Summit Diaper Bank, which presently operates out of my home. When I started the diaper bank I was working part-time and able to devote a sufficient amount of time to running the diaper bank on a voluntary basis. I conducted a Stuff the Truck Diaper Drive event successfully two years in a row and have been the recipient of multiple diaper drives held by churches, schools and individuals. The diaper bank receives small random monetary donations through the year and has qualified for a small local grant two years in a row.
However, due to recent changes in my personal circumstances, I am facing the choice of closing the diaper bank or obtaining enough in donations to allow for an administrative salary, which will enable me to further the mission of providing diapers to families in need. The need for this service has been solidified in the counties I work. To close the diaper bank would be devastating and have negative consequences for the babies we would no longer be able to help.
Charities are generally held to a standard that only 10% of income can be spent on personnel salaries. The remaining 90% is to be spent furthering the diaper bank's mission to obtain and provide diapers monthly and to facilitate growth.
In order for me to continue in this important mission, I am asking for your help to raise the funds necessary to operate the diaper bank full time and provide the best service I can to the babies in my community and the diaper bank's partnered social service agencies. I set many goals for the Portage-Summit Diaper Bank but cannot reach them without your help. Please don't let the diaper bank close, donate today!
