Diana's Veterinary Study Abroad

Donation protected
Hi everyone! My name is Diana Diep and I am a sophomore at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, majoring in Animal Science with an emphasis on Pre-Veterinary Medicine, and minoring in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology. I was recently given the opportunity of a lifetime to be 1 out of 24 students that were accepted into a competitive abroad program to Belize in order to study Wildlife Medicine and Conservation in May 2017!

From as early as I could remember, I’ve always been passionate about animals and had pinpointed that I wanted to become a veterinarian at the age of five. In my brief year and a half in university, I have worked exceptionally diligently to obtain experiences that would steer me closer to my career goals as a veterinarian, including being employed as a veterinary assistant at a companion animal clinic, an intern at a Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, an animal care taker at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, and as a student technician for Veterinary Population Medicine studies on deer, and more. Although these experiences have all been extremely beneficial to further me in my future career, they do not perfectly align with what I truly desire to specialize in, which is either Wildlife or Marine Veterinary Medicine.

However, by embarking on this journey to Belize, I would not only be allowed to choose and confirm the path that I want to travel down, I would also be able to work hands on with native Belize wildlife to gain veterinary experience with diverse species, while also building relationships with other unique individuals that would potentially support/assist me in my upcoming veterinary school acceptance.

While in Belize, I will be spending two weeks in the rainforest and one week on the Glover reef, obtaining hands-on experience with and learning about;

-       Anesthesia & surgery on large cats, monkeys, iguanas, snakes, & birds
-       Spaying/neutering and suturing procedures
-       Avian wing wraps and IM bone pins
-       Primate medication at the Belize Baboon Sanctuary
-       Crocodile capture, restraint, and medicine
-       Manatee husbandry, examination, rehabilitation, and clinical procedures
-       And so much more!

The abroad trip’s total tuition is $6,000, not including expenses that will be paid out of pocket while in Belize. I fortunately received three scholarships, totaling nearly half of the costs so far. This cost will cover round-trip airfare, ground/water taxi transportation, all meals, all activities and donations to local clinics, and lectures.

If I am passionate about anything at all in life, this veterinary work is it. Therefore, this valuable opportunity means so much to me and to receive any help at all on this journey would be such a blessing. Even if you think it may not be much, every dollar counts and ALL donations are welcome and will be greatly appreciated.

With much love and gratitude,

Diana
