Developing And Growing Female Football In Ghana

Donation protected
Hi, I’m Alexandra Keaney, a female soccer coach with a passion to help the female game grow around the world, and to empower girls and women in life. In February 2019, I will be volunteering at the Future Leaders Underprivileged Children's Center and Football club in Accra, Ghana.

During the day I will be volunteering as a teaching assistant at the UCC school and in the evening working with the soccer academy to help develop their players and coaches, as well as assisting in growing and retaining female participation.

Mission

My passion is to empower and educate females within soccer. I want to create strong networks for women who play or work within the game, increase the level of female participation and doing all of that is necessary to ensure girls and women have clear pathways to play and govern the game. As a coach and a female role model within the sport, I want to strengthen football’s ability to positively impact the lives of women and girls around the world.

“One of the challenges in women’s football is a lack of role models for young girls,” said FIFA Chief Women’s Football Officer Sarai Bareman.

On February 14th I will be traveling to Ghana, in partnership with the Ghana Football Project, we will help implement new programs and initiatives to broaden participation levels within female soccer and also assist and inspire the children within the UCC school and soccer club. To do this, I need your help!

Future Leaders UCC and the late founder, Billa Mahmud:

Billa Mahmud, founder of Future Leaders UCC in Ghana, was a visionary man who felt passionately about changing the lives of children for the better. Born and raised in a small town just outside of Accra, he knew poverty and its effects first hand. Recognizing the need for change he started teaching children, who were not in any form of education, basic Maths and English underneath a mango tree. Billa understood how to engage children and inspire them to learn and change their own destiny. The project grew organically over the next 18 years to what it is today; a school of 196 children with many more in Junior High and Senior High School education. He also set up football teams for different age groups to encourage positive behavior and team work and recognized the need to help families in setting up small businesses. His good will, generosity and ambition to make a difference spread far and wide and touched so many people's lives in his short time on Earth. Shortly before he died, Billa saw the beginnings of his dream come true in the form of a permanent school structure. This school will make a difference to hundreds more children's lives and will be a lasting legacy of his work.

Ghana Football Project:
The Ghana Football Project was formed out a love of the beautiful game that continues to this day!

In 2011, two young football coaches from the UK – Lee and Anthony – traveled to the Ghanaian capital Accra as volunteers, saw the incredible passion that children and young people had for football and were convinced that this passion could be harnessed as a force for greater good.

Over multiple visits to Ghana, Lee and Anthony established connections with inspirational local partners who shared an understanding of the life-enhancing power of the world’s game. These partners were above all committed to harnessing love of football to motivate children and young people to acquire the tools to face life’s challenges.

Get kids playing, get them in school, keep them there. Protect the enormously talented ones from predators. Football. Education. Opportunity. The Ghana Football Project was born.

Now a fully accredited 501(c)(3), the Ghana Football Project continues to work with established local football academies and educational institutions in Ghana to provide opportunities for underprivileged young people and children, with a focus on education and sport.

We raise money for the building and sustaining of schools.  We send volunteers to both coach and help out.  We provide equipment.  And we share what we know on how best to battle the very real scourge of human traffickers, who capture the imagination of the most talented players,  exploit their ambition by making impossible promises of a professional career and then ruthlessly abandon them, often leaving homeless or stateless on the streets of Europe.

Over the years, the Ghana Football Project has worked with players who have turned professional in Germany, had tryouts in Italy, the Netherlands and Cyprus and players who have joined High School and College teams in America. But the great majority of those we have worked with are in the process of achieving true success by gaining confidence and satisfaction from playing the game while obtaining a solid education.

It all starts with an abiding love of the beautiful game!
