When will we unite as communities to address violence, to address mental wellness?
In 2010 there were 224 homicides in Baltimore City (Baltimore Sun). In August of 2010 my brother Deshawon was robbed and shot 14 times in Southwest Baltimore. The shooter was never found. After several minutes of death, Deshawon was revived with a promise that he was a miracle. Deshawon left Shock trauma after many surgeries, and having several vital organs removed. Deshawon thrived for an additional 7 years of life. On March 25, 2017, at 30 years old Deshawon collapsed to death in mid-sentence during a family celebration. Like so many other young men Deshawon had a promising future. Deshawon is a husband, and a father to two beautiful girls. As an artist, I'm often asked where does my passion come from. It's at the heart of my pain that I push community efforts, activism, and unity. When senseless violence is afflicted, it effects an entire community. Violence has a lasting effect on the structural context of families, the youth and the economy.
Where does our morale lie? What principles do we stand upon in life? Deshawon lived for 7 years after his shooter left him to die. Violence has desensitized most communities to the point that divisiveness drives selfish ambition. Mental Wellness is disguised as a default of behavior in most urban communities and left unattended. Please help us to lay Deshawon to rest and push his life and legacy to promote unity within our communities and families. He was without a life insurance policy, please help us to raise the funds for his final arrangements.
