There are many people that know and love Derek in the city of San Antonio. He has not only been a pillar of The Flying Saucer since before we opened our doors in 2001, but he is also well known and loved in the local beer community. He has a profound breadth of beer knowledge via drinking and brewing it for quite some time, as well as being an avid reader on the subject. Recently he brewed his 200th batch of beer and is always experimenting with flavors and styles to create his ideal brew.
On Monday Nov 26th Derek was rushed to the hospital by a longtime friend who noticed he was not acting himself. Within five days of arriving at the hospital, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer and surgical action was taken. Derek was released from hospital care this past Friday and now faces a difficult battle against cancer as he will be starting Chemo/Radiation within a week while trying to still live his life as he loves most, brewing beer amongst good friends and cooking amazing food for hundreds, if not thousands of people a week. We are seeking to support both Derek in his time of need as well as his family so that they can thrive through this costly time.
Derek has a community of friends and coworkers who appreciate him and have accepted him as part of their family. His family is by his side through this difficult time of extended hospital stays and surgeries, bolstering him with support. He has been integral in our kitchen development and training, always going above and beyond what we could even ask and holding steady when things seemed out of control. There is not a Flying Saucer employee that can remember a time without him as a constant support. Derek is quite literally the backbone of our kitchen and moreover, our entire establishment.
We are asking people to show their support for a man who is a huge part of the San Antonio beer community and has been a dedicated employee and is a part of the Flying Saucer family. Whether you know him or not, please look in your heart and help Derek and his family as they face one of the most difficult times in their lives this holiday season.
