My name is Alexys Kelly and I am a first year dental student at Meharry Medical College. I am a citizen of The Bahamas and being an international student means that I cannot receive financial aid or student loans from the American government. I have applied to many different scholarships that have rejected me because I was neither an American citizen nor permanent resident. Financially, my parents are not able to fund my education because my mother is currently unemployed and my father is a local taxi driver in The Bahamas. This means that their meager income is only sufficient for the daily bills within the household.
My passion for dentistry started off in my junior year of high school where I shadowed several dentists and fell in love with the career. Upon completing my Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Oakwood University my mind was fixated on going straight into dental school. However, my parents told me that they simply could not afford to do so. Being the person that I am, I refused to allow that to deter me away from my goals, so I worked as a teacher for two years and saved up the little money that I made to help with my exams, applications, and travel expenses to be accepted into dental school.
Receiving the acceptance letter to attend Meharry Medical College was the best feeling in the world and I could not have done it without God by my side. The remaining funds from my savings could not compensate for the first semesters expenses and in order for me to matriculate into my spring semester I would have to completely pay off my fall semester balance which is $15,162.42 and have sufficient funds for next semester’s expenses which is $29, 816.

Year 2: Tuition and fees: 68,052
Year 3: Tuition and fees: 57,777
Year 4: Tuition and fees: 55,547
Total: $ 241,008
