Friends of the Deer:

I need your help. In March, we sent you all a video of inhumane deer trapping in Lakeway, Texas. This video was filmed by Ashlea Beck, who is now facing an expensive legal battle, with allegations of criminal mischief and harassing trappers. We cannot let Ashlea fall victim to this egregious retaliation. We need to raise $10,000 for Ashlea’s legal defense. Please give what you can, and spread the word to your network. Every dollar helps and, on behalf of every C.A.F.A. member, I’m grateful for your support. Below is a note from Ashlea.

My name is Ashlea, and I experienced something horrific in Lakeway that I hope nobody else ever has to endure. My children and I saw a violent deer trapping at the trapping net next to our home.

On Thursday, March 8, I was inside my home when I heard loud, distressing screams from my daughter, “Mommy! Mommy! They’re hurting the deer!” I ran outside and heard very loud, intense shrieks, similar to bleating sheep. I then saw a net on the ground with several squirming lumps. I realized these were trapped deer and as I got closer, I could see the blood and broken limbs. Two deer were bleeding from their mouths, one from its eye, two other deer appeared dead – I couldn’t tell if they were dead or alive because they were so maimed they couldn’t move.

My two daughters who are eight and ten years old were witness to the scene and were inconsolable. The scene was horrifying and we still have nightmares about it.

I yelled at the trappers to STOP HURTING THE DEER. The trappers disregarded me and said they were just doing what the City of Lakeway had hired them to do.

The situation got worse because now the trappers were forcibly handling the deer, roughly pulling them from the net, dragging them on the ground, then savagely throwing them into the horse trailer.

The next day, I contacted the Lakeway City Manager and told him about the incident, and demanded he have this trap removed. He refused and only promised not to trap during the day. He disregarded me, ignored my pleas, and he didn’t think having a trap next to my home, within eyeshot and earshot of my three young children mattered. He couldn’t have cared less. I didn’t sleep at all that weekend because I was so fearful the trappers would return.

On Monday, March 12, the trappers did return. The same frightening sounds all over again…the trap released sounding like a gun shot, the distressed, screaming, trapped deer. I hope nobody ever has to hear these painful sounds. They’re disturbing and inescapable.

Two months later, on Friday, May 15, on Mayor Joe Bain’s last day in office, I received a phone call from the Lakeway Police Department. They had two warrants for my arrest, and wanted me picked up immediately. Mrs. Cross had warned me of this possibility in April, as Charles Edwards had informed her that I was “in big trouble.” But nothing prepared me for the shock of having warrants for my arrest facing criminal charges about an incident my family and I shouldn’t have ever had to endure.

The warrants were issued by Texas Parks and Wildlife for criminal mischief and criminal harassment of the trappers. Both of these charges are serious Class B Misdemeanors and I’ve been forced to hire a criminal defense attorney. My legal fees are $10,000, and I need assistance to offset these unexpected expenses. I am a single mom with two young children.

I know there are many animal lovers in Lakeway, who want the deer trapping stopped. I also know there are many residents who are tired of the “good old boy” system in our city government. It’s my hope that through my legal defense, we can stand up together, and make things better for everyone in Lakeway, so nobody else had to endure what me and my family are experiencing. I appreciate anything and everything you can give and do.

Thank you,
