You might know DeeDee Jonrowe. She’s one of the most well-known competitors in Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race history, having finished the 1,049 mile sled dog race 33 times. She doesn’t just finish, though. DeeDee’s had 16 top-10 finishes and is a three-time runner up in her career, so she’s known for her excellence within the challenging sport.
But this year, just getting to the starting line will be DeeDee’s biggest Iditarod challenge.
You see, in 2015, the Sockeye wildfire near Willow consumed more than 7,200 acres of land and 55 homes – including DeeDee’s. DeeDee and her husband, Mike, lost everything in the wildfire. Their home, vehicles and the essential items to mushing like sleds and harnesses were swallowed up by the flames. Not only that, but in 2015, her biggest sponsor – Shell – left Alaska, ending their relationship. Even worse? Within weeks of the fire, she lost her biggest fan, as her mother, Peg, succumbed to cancer.
Throughout all of that, DeeDee’s never lost track of her passion in life: dog mushing. And in 2016, she’s hoping to line up at the start of her 34th Iditarod. But to do that, she’ll need your help.
She needs your support to get ready for the race and to have all of the equipment needed for the world famous long-distance sled dog race. With no major sponsor and all of the money she has tied up in rebuilding her home and life, she needs the help of the Alaskans and people from around the world who call themselves fans.
