DEAR JESSE MY BROTHER, the documentary.

In February 2014, my only brother Jesse took his own life in a Motel 6 just outside of Philadelphia, PA. Jesse was an incredibly talented photographer, among many other things. My name is Jen, and I am one of Jesse's two sisters. Dear Jesse My Brother  is the place where I sort it all out with him, one letter at a time.

As I continued writing this year, I was unable to ignore the deep desire to tell his story in a more visual way. Not just through writing, but through interviews with those who knew Jesse beginning in childhood all the way to his last days as a heroin addict. A person whose essence was as bright as the sun, and had such a special impact on those who knew him. But, also had his dances with darkness, all the way to the end of his life.

Jesse is not the only one.

There are countless people just like him who share the same struggles, all over the world. Not only do I believe my brother has a powerful story to tell, but I believe everyone who knew him has something to contribute to his story.

As I wrote to my brother in one of my letters:
"I have to address all of this, Jesse. If not for myself, then for you. If not for us, then for the countless human beings alive struggling in their pain who haven’t found their voice yet. And for the ones who are already dead and no longer have a voice, whose life story was, and is, at the mercy of someone alive trying to find the courage to speak up."

Through the Dear Jesse My Brother documentary, my hope is to not only shine light into a very dark place, but to show that love can, and will transcend everything in the end. I have made a promise to my brother, Jesse, to pick up all the broken pieces he left and make something that will last far beyond his untimely death.

This is Jesse's legacy.

ABOUT THIS DEAR JESSE GOFUNDME:

First and foremost, thank you, for taking the time to read about my brother, Jesse, as well as my own journey with losing him.

The making of the DJMB documentary will be a process and done in stages. The focus of the beginning stage will be acquiring interviews and footage for the making of the documentary. I will be traveling to Jesse's hometown and to other US locations for these interviews. This first stage of the DJMB GOFUNDME will be for the travel expenses necessary to make this documentary. Flights, hotels, car rentals, etc.

The words Thank you, seem so insufficient knowing others are supporting and gathering around myself, my family and those who knew Jesse. Whether the donation is 1$ or more, I truly appreciate your kindness and generosity more than I could ever express. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping bring this documentary to fruition, for not only Jesse, but for every person who has ever been effected by addiction, mental struggles or suicide. Without you, this documentary would not be possible.

Love and Light,

Jen Roberts
