Deaf Sober House

Deaf / Hard of Hearing / DeafBlind have struggled for over 20 years with no resources regarding Sober Housing to support their recovery.  Currently there are zero sober houses in the state of MN and the closest is CA which are language/communication accessible for deaf.  Deaf individuals when completing treatment are faced with a grim choice.  Individuals who choose to stay in the Mpls./St. Paul area, go into a sober house where ASL is not used.  Communication, supports and culture are not recognized and deaf are marginalized. There are no flashers for fire alarms, doors, video phones or resources which all hearing people have in these homes.  Deaf Can Inc wants to change this.  We want to open a sober house for Deaf / Hard of Hearing / DeafBlind.  We believe the supports of language accessibility, communication, safety, and culture are paramount to recovery.  Deaf Can Inc is a registered 501c3 non-profit.  We established our company in 2011.  Since then we have established an Independent Living program in NE Minneapolis and a MN Licensed 245D Outreach Program serving Deaf / Hard of Hearing / DeafBlind.  Your donation would allow us to purchase a property and make it both a recovery supported and accessible home. People would be able to stay as long as they are committed to sobriety. We have saved $15k and are hoping to match this amount up to $20k to allow us to buy and rehab an appropriate accessible property.
