Marlee is a 5 month old husky/ shepherd puppy in Prince George, Canada. She is a very sweet, even-tempered girl and already knows how to do many tricks including play-dead. Marlee loves wrestling with her fur-siblings followed by some cuddles with her people.
When we picked Marlee out of the litter, we noticed a little ball of fur on her eye. We thought nothing of it at first, and assumed it was a piece of dirt that could easily be removed. Soon after, we realized that our new puppy actually has a limbal dermoid cyst. This is a genetic problem that occurs in certain breeds of dogs during their fetal development. A dermoid cyst is a non-cancerous growth that can occur on or near the eye. Dermoids often contain skin, hair and/or fat. In Marlee’s case, there are eyelashes growing out of the cyst.
We were advised by a local veterinarian that the puppy should be either returned to the sellers, or should receive a surgery as soon as possible. Marlee likely has difficulty seeing out of her eye. Without a surgery, the cyst will cause lifelong issues, and can burst at any time and cause a painful ulcer. We attempted to give her back to the sellers, but we were advised that she would be put down as the sellers did not want to pay for a surgery. We had already fallen in love with Marlee, so of course we couldn’t give her back knowing this.
Our current situation puts us in a tight financial position, and we could use any help to get Marlee’s surgery, and give her the quality of life she deserves. The most affordable veterinary clinic that we could find to do the surgery is in Vancouver. They’ve quoted between $1500-1700 for the surgery. This does not include the consultation or the medications and follow ups. We are asking for help to get $1500.
