Hilsman Science & Energy Team to DC

Donation protected
***The Hilsman Science & Energy Team has been named 1st Place School of the Year in Georgia and Runner-up for National School of the Year in the 2016 NEED Competition! The delegates are very excited about going to Washington, D.C. to represent Hilsman Middle School, Athens-Clarke County, and the State of Georgia!

Hilsman Middle School is a Title 1 School classified as "Highest Poverty."  There are amazing students on the Science & Energy Team that have put in over 3,000 community service hours at the Food Bank, recycling, and at elementary schools teaching younger students.

Any student at Hilsman, regardless of grade level, can participate in community service activities, such as the Trash Hunger Campaign and the Energy Education Campaign.   The Trash Hunger Campaign is a school-wide program in which team members collect non-traditional items that cannot be recycled locally. These items are sorted and shipped to Terra Cycle.  The earnings are used to Trash Hunger...all of the earnings are donated to hunger relief agencies.  We donate to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia and UNICEF.  The team's Energy Education Campaign teaches others in our school and community that conserving energy can help save their own dollars and help the planet, too.  Team members actively educate others through information booths at events in the community, Energy Star information give-aways, and leading games that teach about energy conservation with elementary and preschool children.

All of the campaigns and service projects the team is involved with allow students with no financial resources of their own to give back to the community and help the planet while learning a sense of compassion and civic responsibility.  The students on the team are awarded participation points for their work with our service projects and campaigns.

Donations to this project will help student delegates attend the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project's Youth Awards in Washington, D.C. this summer.  While in DC, the delegates will attend special hands-on learning sessions with science and engineering field-area experts.  They will get the opportunity to visit the Capitol, Pentagon, Smithsonian Museums, and many other historic sites.  They will also interact with like-minded students from all over the United States.  This experience will be energizing, inspiring, and educational for the student delegates.

The student delegates, their parents, and I will be truly grateful for any help you can provide.   Many of the students' families cannot afford opportunities like these for their children without some help.  Sponsorships from donations to this project are awarded to students based on both need and participation points.  Any contribution that you make will help a student at Hilsman Middle School and have a domino effect in our community for others and the planet.  Thank you for your interest in helping Hilsman students on the Science & Energy Team.  Your support and encouragement are appreciated.
