Daryl Homeniuk Stroke Rehab Fund

Donation protected

On December 18, 2016, Daryl's life suddenly changed when he suffered a massive stroke that left him unable to move the right side of his body and unable to speak or write.  He has also suffered significant memory loss. He spent five weeks in critical care in Fukuoka's Saiseikai General hospital before moving to a rehab facility in Fukuoka where he has been ever since.
Although he is making some progress, it has been a slow road to recovery. Daryl can now walk with assistance but still doesn't have use of his right arm and cannot support his body weight. His verbal communication is limited to a handful of words, and he is unable to communicate through writing.  His inability to express himself is his greatest source of frustration.

Daryl has been the sole provider for his family which includes his two children Mike and Misia. He worked two jobs: teacher and wedding officiate in order to make ends meet prior to his stroke.  Now that Daryl is unable to work, there is no income to support his family.
We have also been unable to get a firm answer on how much Daryl can comprehend. At times, he seems to understand a great deal, while at other moments, he seems confused and unsure. We need to raise money for Daryl's immediate and long-term care, as it looks like he may be in rehab for several years. We are hoping that in the near future, Daryl will become strong enough to move back to Edmonton, so we can ensure that he is getting the proper care here. In the meantime, I will need to go to Japan again as it is proving very difficult to collect all the information I need to aid Daryl, given the time difference and language issues.

For now, we are looking at Daryl's immediate needs; however, we need to start planning for the long-term. Some things that we may use the money for include transportation, special needs equipment, accommodation, meds, Japanese household affairs, etc.

Daryl's personal savings are all but gone now. His parents and I have been keeping his finances afloat in Japan, but we can't do it on our own. Now that we are learning that he may require many years of rehab, it doesn't look like he'll be able to return to work for years, if ever. Any help you can provide is very much appreciated.
