Firefighters - Hertfordshire, UK

9/12/16
UPDATE - Unfortunately Darrens condition and health has declined. The stem cell therapy has worked to some degree and if anything has given the past 6 months extended life with his family and friends. It was always a risk that he made need further treatment to slow this deadly disease down, unfortunately Darren will need further stem cell treatment. The facility we used last time are willing to give Darren a huge discount. We are now in the process of sorting so,ex fund raising ideas for the new year to raise the £7000 to get Darren to Thailand for more stem cell therapy... We ask you for your continued support and sharing..

The money raised so far a huge amount went to his first lot of treatment and the rest has gone towards getting Darren a stairlift and electric chair along with some other essential home adaptions to assist Darren & Sue with making life easier at Home.

We know this is an expensive time of year for everyone but even if you could just continue to share the fund raising page and events that would be great

Original Story

We are a group of firefighters based in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. A colleague of ours,  Darren, has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.  Our aim is to raise money for him to undergo pioneering treatment.

Darren's Story
Darren was a Serving Firefighter up to the 6th may 2016.  Protecting the people of Hertfordshire and based at Cheshunt Fire Station for 11 years. His career has been cut short due to be him being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.  (MND)

Previously darren was an airport firefighter based at city airport.

Darren has risked his life saving lives of others, he never knew them prior to their hour of need , he never knew their occupations  or their families.. He never asked for thanks ... This is Darren's hour of need and he needs Our help!!

In Darren's  words
" the 6th of January 2016 is a date that I can never forget, it's like a loved ones birthday that is totally embedded in my memory. Unfortunately it's not a date of happiness but the date I was diagnosed,  With a terminal illness that has no cure and is the most awful illness imaginable. My first thoughts weren't for myself but for my partner of 30 years and my 19 year old daughter. Then I thought how do I tell my brother, sister, mum and work colleagues"

Darren's Condition
Over the past year Darren has had symptoms but didn't realise what that were until Jan 2016. Previous to this he was active and participated in a range of sports and social activities.

Darren has been a Chelsea season ticket holder for over 30 years.

Darren has ran 11 marathons world wide raising thousands of pounds for the firefighters charity and other great causes.

Darrens life expectancy now is less than 2 years. Due to the aggressive nature of the disease, since January Darren is now reliant on a stick for walking and is motor neurone skills have slowed down.

Darren didn't qualify for trial treatments in the UK.

There is no known cure for Motor Neurone Disease and it effects 1 in 100,000 people. There is no reason for its development his neuroglist said "it's like filling wembley stadium  and throwing a dart"

Further info on the symptoms and condition  please visit the website below

Our aim
Darren has passed pre tests and is eligible to undergo pioneering stem cell replacement treatment available in China.

This won't cure Darren but it has had huge results in extending people's life expectancy and quality of life and slowing down the onset of symptoms and loss of motor skills. This is a treatment that can be administered on several occasions and slows down the aggressiveness of the disease.

Unfortunately for Darren this is the only option available to him to try and do something rather than letting this disease take over his body.

HIS STEM CELL TREATMENT IS DUE TO START ON JUNE 12th.. darren needs this treatment before he deterioates further and isnt eligible..

The purpose of raising this money is initially for Darren to go to China to undergo the stem cell treatment at a cost of £20,000. The remaining money will be used to provide further treatment in the future to hopefully extend Darren's life and enable a quality life with his family .

A further £20,000 will be allocated for further stem cell treatment or any further treatment that is advised following a review period of Darren's symptoms.

The remaining money will be used to make Darren's remaining life as comfortable as possible and to remain in his family home. This will be used  for house alterations, wheel chair access and things such as mobility beds and chairs.

5% of all Funds donated will go to the MND Association and once the £100,000 target has been reached, any funds above that will go 50% to the MND Association and 50% to the Firefighters Charity.

Final note
Darren is the type of person who wouldn't ask for things like this and finds it slightly embrassing. Him and his family now need our help after years of helping others.

As his colleagues and friends we are grateful in advance for any money people can afford to donate. If we can give Darren longer with his family, that's a cost that you can't put a value on.

On Behalf of Darren, Sue and Chloe.. We are grateful for your generosity and wish you and your family well.
