Daniel VanAlstine Memorial Fund

Daniel VanAlstine was my brother.  He was a brother to three sisters, Susan, Chantilly and Melissa and the only son of Suzanne Charity, and his father Dwaine VanAlstine.  He was deeply loved by his family and community, but especially by his nieces and nephews, (Joseph, Collin, Bryan, Sonya, Logan, Lexie, Jade, Adrian, Lilyana and Antonio) who could always count on their uncle Danny to make them laugh and to hug them tight.  He was a kind-hearted person, someone who never failed to help others and someone who, despite all the challenges he’d struggled with in his life, just wanted to make people laugh.

It is with a heavy heart that our family announces Daniel’s passing.  His body was recovered from Muskegon Lake on Thursday, April 13th, 2017.  We had been searching for Daniel since the day after Thanksgiving 2016 and we want to thank all of our friends, family, Daniel’s good friends and our online community for coming together to help us in the search and for elevating the voices of our family through social media and news outlets.  You all gave us hope and comfort during these difficult times and your kindness and love will not be forgotten.

Our family has been deeply affected by this.  In recent years Daniel was a hard person to get close to and we all deeply miss him and are hurting for all the time we missed with him before he passed.  When he was present, he lit up a room with his infectious smile and laughter.  He was a loving brother, uncle, son and friend.

I have started a fund for my brother Daniel, to cover any funeral expenses and costs to the family during this time.  My hope is that this fund will help to ease the financial burden so that my family can take time to grieve rather than focusing on the financial cost of Daniel’s passing, especially for my mother who has been through several months of trauma coping with his disappearance already.  No mother should ever have to bury her son and this has been extremely difficult for her.  She never gave up on Daniel.  She will never give up on him.  He will always remain her baby boy.

To everyone who has helped us to search for my brother, who kept out a watchful eye for him, who befriended him in his life and helped him when he was down, we say thank you.  Thank you for keeping a space for him in your heart and for pouring out love and compassion to my family during this difficult time.  We are truly blessed to have each of you in our lives.  Our brother is blessed by your presence and love.

Please, if you have a positive or funny story to share with the family to uplift them throughout this process, please share it below in the comments or on social media and use the tag #DanielVanAlstine.  I will be collecting them over the next week and including some of them in our family tribute video.

We thank you all in advance for your love and compassion.

Blessing,
