Dance Theater Baikal Building Fundraiser

Donation protected
The Buryat Dance and Music Theater "Baikal" has never had its own home. It started in 1942 in Ulan-Ude, Russia (then USSR) and is the only professional group dedicated to protecting the nomadic music and dance cultures of the indigenous peoples of the Lake Baikal Area in Siberia.

The origins of this music and dance developed under the influence of shamanism and Buddhism. The theater has become one of the leading artistic groups of Russia, and includes a ballet troupe, an orchestra of Buryat national instruments and vocal soloists, many of whom have received high recognition at home and abroad. Their fundamental repertoire is the treasure of Buryat-Mongol folklore collected over the past 8 decades, reflecting ancient traditions of Siberian nomads. The ensemble has participated in many international folk festivals around the world, including Germany, France, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Japan, Mongolia, Taiwan, India and Canada. In May 2017, Baikal theater won the nationwide television competition between professional dance collectives, on a very popular primetime show called "Танцуют Все" (Everybody Dances) - vaulting the group into nationwide celebrity status.

Despite all of the acclaim, the theater struggles with day-to-day complications which they have not been able to solve for more than 70 years. The main problem is the lack of artistic and professional workspace.
Immediately after winning "Everybody Dances", a plot of land on the banks of the river Uda was given to Baikal Theater in order to construct a performing arts center. In 2018, a design for the center was chosen by public vote of the people of the Buryat Republic. The center will include: a concert hall, an educational complex, a media complex, exhibition galleries, etc.

This fundraiser is the first step toward starting construction of the performing arts center.
It is necessary to raise the equivalent of $50,000 by December 23, 2018 in order for this project to move forward.

Building a performing arts center for Baikal theater will ensure that future generations will be able to experience the richness of the culture of the indigenous peoples of the Lake Baikal area. It will preserve and develop ancient, unique nomadic artforms and share them with the rest of the world.
