Mack here. As a pastor, a hospice counselor and a teacher, I've spent most of my life helping heal others' pain. Now, for the first time, I'm the one needing help.
On October 9, I fell off the roof of my one-story house in Charlotte, N.C. Money already had been tight, so it was up to me to haul my 69-year-old self up there to make some repairs. Well, I slipped. And now it's up to my beautiful wife, Ellen, and wonderful son, Ian, to shoulder the responsibility for taking care of someone who is paralyzed from the waist down and unable to use my hands. I also have a head injury and want to sleep a lot as I begin to heal.
We already were in a tough financial spot - I was forced into retirement a few years ago when the school district was making staff cuts. We have missed a few mortgage payments along the way and had to give up a car to the bank.
What we need now is some financial help to catch up, cover the immediate medical costs that Medicare won't cover and keep the family afloat while I'm in a rehab hospital learning to live as a paraplegic. Now I'm pretty sure that our total medical costs will exceed half a million dollars. But if we could just get caught up and past these most immediate needs, God will provide for us, I'm sure.
