Introduction
Thank you for taking the time to visit our page. Our mission is to provide opportunities for young children in Akropong to improve their literacy by providing free access to a variety of books and literary materials. We wish to complement the existing education system by reinforcing a culture of leisure reading away from the classroom.
Our Vision
Giraffe Mobile Education Project, or ‘Giraffe’ for short, provides educational support to children of primary-school age in the Akropong Akuapem Township in Ghana. Providing regular access to books and other educational resources through a ‘mobile library’ travelling between several primary schools, Giraffe
encourages children to learn with excitement and curiosity, becoming confident and taking greater pride in their education. Storytelling and drama, alongside the development of a personalised reading record for every child, ensures that children are continuously discovering something new.
An active aspect of our work will be enhancing the identification and support of children with Special Educational Needs, as these children are often unrecognised and subsequently unsupported in this environment. This frustrates both children and their parents, causing children to lose their confidence and subsequently their interest in education. Through our initiatives we hope to identify each child’s gifts helping them to develop these accordingly.
Use of the animal name “Giraffe” appropriately demonstrates the aim of the project, which is to encourage children to grow up ‘standing tall’ – confident to read from an early age and empowered to go on to live healthier and more fulfilling lives through adolescence and into adulthood. Our passion is to see children learn and thrive and the project is designed to be educational and fun.
Your donations will be used for start up costs including the funding of a vehicle to transport the books to the schools, and for resources such as reading records and pencils. We are also planning to employ two members of staff to run the project.
