Larry & Cynthia Disaster Relief

Donation protected
Late Sunday night, after historic rainfall in the Wimberley region, the little Blanco River – usually no more than a couple of feet deep – rose to an unprecedented 44 feet and ripped through everything in its path – including the house we’ve called home for the past 12 years. Everything we own is either gone or beyond repair, including our cat Samson who drowned. We are starting from scratch.

Fortunately, we did have flood insurance. The timeline on receiving these funds, however, is unknown. What most people don’t know is after a disaster of this magnitude, the interim period – between when the event happens and when you receive funds from insurance – can be very long. That’s mostly because FEMA (the government entity responsible for coordinating/allocating funds in the wake of disaster) and the insurance companies move at a snail’s pace. This is especially true right now.

There were so many people affected by this flood – not to mention the hundreds of people nationally that have been displaced by extreme weather this spring – that FEMA is completely overwhelmed with requests. This means it could be months before we see any kind of relief check. And while we wait, bills must still be paid, basic life expenditures continue, etc.

We are currently living off of VERY modest savings and the generosity of our friends and family, but this will only last so long. We must begin putting in place a more sustainable, interim solution that will get us through this period of transience. That’s why we’re asking for your help.

It’s impossible to put a dollar amount on all of the belongings we’ve lost: photos, family heirlooms, antique furniture that’s been in our family for generations, art, books, music, all of our records for our Travelphile Tours business – these things simply cannot be replaced. But we do have to get back on our feet and the most important things we need right now to start the process of rebuilding and recovering are:

$$ for temporary rental housing: The flood insurance will cover the value of our house and (to a certain extent) the things inside that were lost, but it does not provide funding for the temporary housing we’ll need over the next few months while our house is rebuilt or we’re forced to find a new home, which could take up to 6 months or longer.

$$ for computers, printer/scanner/fax, and office supplies to get the Travelphile Tours business back up and running. This business is our livelihood. The sooner we can get back to work, the closer we’ll be to stability.

A car: Cindy’s Volvo was lost in the flood, leaving us with Larry’s old truck that could break down at any time. Reliable transportation is a must during this period of transience.

Obviously there are many other things that will need to be replaced, but if we can secure funds to help with these necessities, we’ll have the building blocks in place to start putting our life back together.

Anything you can donate will help us get back on our feet. Any amount helps. If you’d prefer to send donations to us by mail, you can send them to our daughter’s address where we’ll be staying for the foreseeable future:
