This is my best friend, Mac.
In 2013 I found out I'd been approved for the opportunity to give him a home with me, coming from a rescue specializing in the bull terrier breed. In the years following, I'd gained not only a new best friend, but an amazing addition to my family in this goofy, lovable dog. I live in a town over an hour away from my immediate family and support system. Mac made this feel bearable. He was right beside me through every up and down that I faced.
Now Mac is facing his own big obstacle in life.
Last Tuesday, January 7th, 2020 he fell ill and was vomiting constantly and began going to the bathroom in the house, which was completely out of character for him, being house trained. I noticed that his stool and vomit also had bits of blood in it. I took him to the vet immediately and found out the possibility of him having gastroenteritis. He was very dehydrated, and treated for that, and his nausea. An answer that was fixable was a huge relief. I was sent home with my dog, medications and solid hope that he would be back to normal. After what seemed like being able to let out a deep breath, my dog still wasn't eating or acting like himself at all. He was very lethargic. After not being able to get him to eat anything, we took another trip to the vet. This time the vet told me there was a possibility of an intestinal blockage, or Addison's disease. I have to get him a barium swallow and more x-rays to find out if he also needs surgery. I've used every last dollar I have to try and save my best friend and to still not have answers or feel any closer to him feeling better or being okay is terrifying. My last option now is to depend on the kindness of strangers to help me continue to save my best friend in the world.
