This is Maria Churchill Krueger. Maria is a third grade teacher at New Buffalo Elementary School in New Buffalo, Michigan. Maria’s daughter Emma is a Junior at Bridgman High School.
Maria was also the Elementary’s Physical Education teacher one year and is a runner and into everything having to do with fitness which baffled everyone when she was diagnosed in October 2015 with Liposarcoma, a Cancer of the fat cells.
Maria hadn’t been feeling well for about a year and had been seeing a doctor. Then she went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where the doctors found a mass in her abdomen and she was diagnosed with Liposarcoma. Maria had to put her teaching position on hold while going through treatment.
Maria came back to the Elementary School on March 31st to visit everyone. The kids lit up with big smiles as did the staff when they saw her. Her smile and attitude put everyone at ease as she spoke about her cancer and hugged her students.
Maria had radiation in November and Chemotherapy in January. On Tuesday April 5th Maria underwent surgery at the Mayo Clinic. They were able to remove the Tumor, adrenal gland a kidney and part of her diaphragm. She is now home and recovering from this.
I had offered a while back to start this fund for Maria, but she declined with everything she was having to go through. Now recovering she has agreed to allow me to do this for her.
Cancer isn’t just a strain on your body but also on your mind, wondering what is going to happen to you, your family, your job and also your finances. Traveling back and forth to the Mayo Clinic and all the treatments and surgery add up and insurances do not cover everything. There are big deductibles and co-pays, not to mention everyday expenses and loss of pay.
Please lets help Maria as she has helped so many of us and our children!
