Clemson University Conservation of Marine Resources Creative Inquiry Team
Our Mission
The Conservation of Marine Resources Creative Inquiry Team is a group of undergraduate students from Clemson University that participates in marine ecology research that benefits the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Our overall goals are to understand what factors influence the interactions between marine organisms, how these interactions influence ecosystems, and how we can conserve these habitats for future generations. Our current projects include studying the influence of parrotfish on coral reef ecosystems, the effects of sponge mortality on Caribbean spiny lobsters, and predicting the success of future coral transplants. Our students keep very busy throughout the year with data collection, analyses and presentations at local and national conferences. Check out our blog! Conservation of Marine Resources
Our Trip
We will be using these funds to take our team of 8 students to the Florida Keys in March 2017. This trip will allow these students hands-on experiences to learn new skills in data collection. More importantly, it will expose them to the issues the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is facing and encourage a quest for understanding the causes and finding solutions. By taking these students to the field, they will have what it takes to make a difference in the future of coral reef conservation.
Our Expenses
Our expenses include transportation to the field, housing in the field at the Keys Marine Laboratory, boat rentals to visit our sites, food, and snorkeling/diving equipment. The total for our trip is $8,500. We have already raised $6,000 through grants and are actively fundraising through several other avenues.
