Help create our CM classroom!!

As most of you may know (or maybe not), I recently accepted a teaching position through Teach For America, and just moved to Las Vegas after living in Southern California for the past 22 years!

For the next 2 years (or more) I'll be teaching 3rd grade at Lowman Elementary School, a school about 20 minutes north of Las Vegas Strip. In its current state, the school is experiencing a lot of changes, including a major teacher overhaul. As one of the new teachers at this school, one of the toughest things to do is getting my classroom ready for my students on the first day, as well as the rest of the school year.

The theme for my classroom revolves around the idea of having my students develop a Change Maker mentality. Change Maker is a term I developed alongside my Collaboration group this past summer. The idea started off as kind of a joke, but it caught on quickly, and grew on me greatly. Throughout the summer we continually called our students Change Makers. We engaged in activities, lessons, and themes in which we learned about how different people throughout history have changed the world in one way or another. Some of the subjects we discussed in just 4 weeks of summer school included: Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, Caesar Chavez, The Tuskegee Airmen, Malala, Martin Luther King Jr., Ghandi, and more!

But summer school was only 4 weeks. Imagine what my Change Makers will be able to do with a full year. They'll be able to discuss current world events. They'll organize and engage in community service projects within their local community. They will create long-term goals and know how to get there. My Change Makers will leave this classroom believing that they can change the world, because the people that do, are the people who believe they can.

I usually am not the type of person to ask for these kinds of things, but as the school year inches closer and closer, I am left with the realization that I can't do this alone.

Any amount donated will be extremely helpful to me and my Change Makers in creating our classroom. Funds that I receive through this page will directly go towards buying the supplies, books, and decorations we'll need to ensure that we have the best learning environment possible.  A bulk of the funds will go towards building my class library, because I strongly believe in the power of reading, and that through reading, anything is possible.

This page was created entirely by myself; not Teach for America, Clark County School District, nor Lowman Elementary.

Thank you for your help!
(Any action helps. A donation, a share, or just reading about my vision are all greatly appreciated!)
