Help Crystal Valentine Get to Paris

$1,595 of $3,500 goal

Raised by 40 people in 42 months
Hello, my name is Crystal Valentine. I am a poet, performer and activist studying Creative Writing and Adolescent Mental Health Studies at New York University. This semester I have been accepted into my Creative Writing study abroad program and will be spending my summer semester in Paris. My acceptance into this program is a dream come true. Writing has always been a passion for me. I am a black female poet, and I use my poems as a medium to talk about different topics and events that affect me and my community. I want to enter new spaces and advocate for black and brown lives while also learning from, and listening to the different experiences of those of a different culture. I also hope to learn new literary devices to better my writing, and therefore enhance the message of my poems. I unfortunately do not have the funds to pay my way to Paris and am in the process of filling out a scholarship to raise money. Any little donation would help toward this amazing opportunity. Thank you in advance for any donations, it is greatly appreciated.

Bio:

Born and raised in the Bronx, Crystal Valentine has been writing poetry since she was in the fourth grade. She is currently enrolled at NYU, studying Creative Writing and Adolescent Mental Health Studies. She is the current two-time Grand Slam Champion of NYU's poetry slam team and has won first place at the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitation (CUPSI) in 2015 and 2013. She was a member of the 2014 Urban Word youth slam team and is also the 2015 NYC Youth Poet Laureate. She has performed at renowned locations such as the Lincoln Center, New Amsterdam Theater, the Apollo Theater, and the Nuyorican's Poet's Café. She has also made appearances on the Melissa Harris-Perry show as well as the Brian Lehrer Radio talk show. Even moreso than in her own poetic talent, Crystal believes in poetry's ability to instill change in those who embrace it. As a black female poet, she believes that it is her duty to continue to share the unjust and undocumented experiences of people of color inside and outside of her community. A carrier of #blkgirlmagic and a soon to be author, Crystal describes herself as a lover of food, anime, people and above all, Chance The Rapper.
