To get around or out of the house is a freedom we regularly take for granted -
Its hard to get around these days for some.
But -
Imagine not being able to bend your ankles or knees....
You cant walk... in fact you need a wheelchair and its very, very difficult to get in and out of a car.
This is my brother David.
My brother is one of the most resilient spirits I know. We are often blown away by his ability to keep his humour in his difficult situation.
In 2010 David was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL).
His rare form of this disease meant he required an urgent bone marrow transplant to survive. Luckily my youngest brother, Chris, was a perfect match and saved his life. This was the best "cure".
Unfortunately the best cure has resulted in a new disease, Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD), which has slowly rendered him disabled over the last 5 years. This disease comes from his new immune system attacking his skin, muscles and internal organs. His quality of life has been drastically affected.
He's often unwell and needs to attend medical appointments regularly to keep this disease under "control".
But getting in a regular car is hard. I challenge you to try it yourself without bending your legs and ankles. This has been a regular daily obstacle. The difficulty has progressed to the point where the struggle to get in and out of regular vehicle for transportation is just about impossible.
We need a Freedom mobile - A David Mobile - A vehicle capable of wheelchair friendly transport.
