Heroine. Civil rights activist. Advocate. Environmentalist. Strategist. Advisor. Innovator. Fighter. Icon. Mrs. Cora Tucker is my Grandmother. Her life is one of triumph, conflict, and victory. Segregation and equality were worlds away from Cora's hometown of Halifax County, Virginia: she was quoted as saying growing up in the south was "pure hell". The daughter of a widowed sharecropper, Tucker witnessed her Mother being treated unfairly due to her race and gender which ignited the fire towards her future career, vowing, "If I ever learn how to do anything, I'm gonna tell everybody I know." Cora rose above her means, gaining knowledge from countless leaders, including Reverend Jesse Jackson, former Governor Douglas Wilder, and Mrs. Coretta Scott-King. What followed was a lifelong commitment to her community, the Commonwealth of Virginia, the United States and World. Mrs. Tucker would also go on to advocate for voter education and registration, environmental protection, housing, employment, and wage equality for African Americans, women, and the working poor. My Grandmother faced tremendous opposition while developing a career of service - at times, being called a "troublemaker" and "hysterical" - she continued the work within the civil rights movement. Undeterred by harassment, and intimidation - including death threats - Cora encouraged others to find their voice, regardless of personal sacrifices. This story is remarkable. We have been invigorated by her work ethic, touched by her giving spirit, discovering self-worth and boldness in our bloodline. In our research, we've noticed issues she worked on twenty years ago remain significant today. A narrative of resilience, power, and devotion will tell Cora's story, in her words: it will also be a call to action across the United States.  In 2019, we will challenge people to find their voice in advocacy and activism, registering people to vote, discuss environmental justice, equality, discrimination and more. We want to show people it doesn't matter where you come from, you can make a difference. Your financial support will go directly towards the production and development of this important story which will be available for viewing everywhere in 2020. Your contribution will also assist in outreach and education across the United States.
