Cooking Classes for Chicago kids
Tax deductible
Five years ago and 100+ students later, cooking classes have been offered to McPherson students at no cost through Common Threads, a national nonprofit organization that provides a preventative health program solution through hands-on cooking programs and nutrition education.
Common Threads’ mission is to educate children on the importance of nutrition and physical wellbeing, empowering them to be agents of change for healthier families, schools, and communities. Read more at www.commonthreads.org
Times are tough for many national nonprofits and unfortunately, the classes for our 3-8 grades will no longer be offered for free.
Every year we have well over 50+ students apply for the 20 spots available for the Cooking Skills and World Cuisine program alone.
We intend to keep this as a free after school program for our kids as a majority of our students come from low income households, a primary target for Common Threads purpose. The program will no longer be offered unless we can finance this through the community and givers like you.
Here are the logistics:
● $2700 covers all costs including the ingredients, a cookbook and full program with a trained chef
● 9 Chef Jerry-led cooking classes offered
● Students learn nutrition and well-being through culturally-related cooking incorporating health and appreciation for other cultures!
● Children collaborate, create and celebrate!
