Concerto Doc-Get Us to Broadcast

$372 of $4,000 goal

Raised by 6 people in 30 months
Concerto is a compelling documentary about two talented brothers who overcame a difficult childhood at the hands of a brilliant but disturbed father.  Charles Rex and Christopher Rex are both accomplished symphony musicians, well-respected by their peers.  The theme of Concerto is: Are we who we are because of our past, or in spite of it?

I believe it is an important story with a powerful message for people of all ages, but especially for young gifted people (and their parents) who must struggle with the challenges placed on them by a demanding, competitive world.

The film has appeared in several film festivals over the past two years. It premiered at the Atlanta International Film Festival in April 2016 to an appreciative audience. In July 2016 it was screened at the Madrid International Film Festival and in September 2016 it screened at the Charlotte Film Festival. In February 2017 it was the opening film for the Classical Arts Film Festival in Napa, CA, and received the Best of the Festival Award.

We are now ready to start looking for distribution for our film. Our only obstacle at this point is the need for Errors and Omissions Insurance E&O Insurance). It protects a filmmaker from being sued for the use of titles and footage that might have accidentally been used without the necessary permissions. No one will broadcast our film without it.

The cost of E&O insurance for a documentary is $3000 to $4000.  We need to raise that amount before we can go to broadcast.

We know there are many of you who have supported the film over the years of production, and beyond. Please consider helping us again in this final push to get Concerto out into the world. For those of you who are new to the film, we encourage you to become supporters of a film we feel deserves to be seen.

In addition, we would love for you to consider hosting a private party where people coul donate to this GoFundMe campaign. Screening parties are a wonderful event, hosted in your home, or at some other venue of your choosing. Viewing the film with  friends can be a wonderful evening of camaraderie and enlightening discussion. Please contact me if you'd like to host a party and I will walk you through the process, as well as attending the event as I am able. You can contact me here on GoFundMe if you are interested.

You can also support us by making a cash donation here. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have helped us share this film with so many people who would get so much out of seeing it.  In addition, for contributions over $50, we will send you a DVD of the film for your personal viewing.

I can't even begin to express my gratitude to all of you who have given in the past, and to all of you who are responding to our gofundme campaign.  Because of you, Concerto will succeed!!

Sincerely,
Cristina Cassidy
Director/Executive Director

Hi all,
Just an update about all things Concerto.

We are very happy to announce that Concerto is an official selection at the Charlotte Film Festival 2016, September 22-October 2, in Charlotte, NC. Our film will be screened on Sunday, September 25, at the Ayrsley Grand Cinema at 9110 Kings Parade Blvd at 4:40 p.m.

We are hopeful that this will help promote the film to a wider audience and increase our support base.

As I've mentioned in previous updates, we are struggling to stay above water due to legal, licensing and marketing costs of the film. I wish we were a big Hollywood production company with lots of cash, but then, do I really? The small, independent filmmaking aspect of this film is part of what makes it so special. It wasn't produced by Hollywood. It was a dream I had many years ago, and it took many years to bring it to fruition, but it is a strong film, with a deep message, and I truly believe it will reach the audiences it needs to reach.

That "reach" depends on help from those who love the arts. In the old days (like way back old days--as in the Renaissance) artists had patrons who helped them sustain their art. I'm no Michelangelo or Leonardo, folks, but I am an artist with a dream, and I'm looking for those who want to help me make that dream a reality. This is a fully produced film that needs help getting launched. You can make the difference.

I think there is another interesting fact about this project that I rarely mention. I began this project when I was 57. I was told on several occasions that I was too old to be a video producer/filmmaker. When I formed my production company and called it Cristina Cassidy Productions, I was warned by many people, men and women alike, that I would never get business because I am a woman and women don't get hired to do video. There was some truth to that, and it was a struggle at first, but I somehow managed to push past that.

I don't think of myself as some sort of Grandma Moses of filmmaking, and those of you who know me know I'm a pretty youthful person, but I do take some pride in being a woman filmmaker of a certain age who has defied barriers created by people who may not understand that the creative spirit is ageless.

So, I'll get off my soapbox now, and simply ask you to consider making a donation to our film, and I say "our film" because it has been a collaborative effort. Please go to our website (link below) to read more about our creative team. A donation of any amount would mean so much. And if you could spread the word to other filmmakers and lovers of the arts and those who just love a good story, the makers of Concerto would be deeply indebted to you.

HI All,
I want to thank all of you who have contributed to our campaign so far. We are busy submitting our film to film festivals and getting the film copyrighted. All of this takes money. That's how you can help.

I really want to encourage all of you who have supported the film and those who would like to support the film to consider having a private crowdfunding party. It is a wonderful way to get to see the film and to host a truly fun and inspiring event.

It isn't as complicated as it might seem. You can easily host a party in your home. I will send you a guide on how to put the party together as well as a DVD of the film. I may even be able to attend your event, depending on how far away you are, and my availability.

These Concerto fundraising events are a wonderful way to entertain your guests and to get a lively discussion going. In fact, the discussions that this film generates are the best part of the experience, in my humble opinion. (If you'd like to talk to people who've had private parties for Concerto, please let me know and I'll put you in contact with them.)

Collecting the donations is easy because your guests can donate directly to this GoFundMe campaign online at the party!

PLEASE consider having such an event to help us launch this film into the world. We still have legal fees to cover, the making of a DCP (digital cinema package) and E&O insurance. We need to get this last item--E&O Insurance, which can run in the thousands (I've been quoted $2500-3000 for Concerto)--in place as soon as possible. Your help in raising the funds for this expense would help us protect our film legally.

I suggest planning a fundraising party six week out, so that gives your guests plenty of time to get the date on their calendars. I also will provide you with a list of questions to ask your guests about the film (if I can't attend the event).

I believe that those of you who have seen the film will agree that it needs to get out there and be seen. We've been told that it creates many levels of involvement for audiences. It is an emotional and artistic experience for many.

Also, we will know by next week if Concerto has been chosen to screen at the Charlotte Film Festival (September 22- October 2.) If we get in, this would be a fabulous time to have a fundraising party for the film. You could have a pre-screening fundraiser and then all attend the screening together!

Again, thanks to all who have made donations. With your help, we WILL get this film launched successfully!

All the best,
Cristina Cassidy

Hi All!

We are in the copyrighting phase of our film. You'd be surprised how involved getting your film copyrighted is. You have to get permission from all relevant parties who were involved in the making of the film to sign off for the rights. I have given authorship to relevant parties. That means that they were significant contributors to the film. Still, it did take a lawyer to walk me through the entire process, which means of course, that there were legal fees involved.

I'm hopeful that we can raise the funds necessary to get Concerto into the public arena in a timely fashion. And you can help!

As mentioned, there are some significant costs still needing to be covered:

Legal fees: $4,000+
Licensing fees: : $2000+
Creation of a DCP for film festivals and
movie showings: $1500+
E&O Insurance: $2000+
Film Festival and Marketing Costs: $1500+
Payment of personnel: $3000+

So, the $10K we are seeking to raise will not cover the entire amount due, but I feel confident that if we get to distribution, we will be able to cover the additional costs still outstanding.

Many of you asked if I was going to Madrid to attend the Madrid International Film Festival where I was nominated in the Best Director of a Documentary category. When I went to buy tickets, I found out that the week of the festival is the peak season for tourism from the States to Europe, and a plane ticket alone would be $2500. With my present legal fees, that trip was out of the question.

I think I've already posted that I will be selling my video equipment soon (once I finish one last project) to help to defray Concerto costs. I've also decided to step away from my video production work to dedicate my energies full time to promote Concerto. I started my video production company 8 years ago to pay for Concerto, and that business, along with generous donations from supporters over the past 8 years, have sustained our film.

The "ask" has always been hard for me. There are SO many worthy causes out there that need support. But the reality is that many artistic endeavors need support, too. The Rex brothers didn't come from privilege, and I think that is an important part of their story. There are many gifted kids all over the world who I feel would benefit from this story. I want especially to reach their parents to send the message of how to support and nurture children who have a love and a passion for art, or really, for any endeavor that they love.

SO many people at the Atlanta Film Festival and folks who have hosted private fundraising screenings for Concerto have told me how viscerally this film affected them, about their own childhoods. From a personal standpoint, our story serves a purpose, too.

Please consider making a donation--however small--to support our film. Maybe use the change you'd put towards a Starbucks' coffee or a trip to the movies towards a donation. And if you could tell others to make a small donation to our film, that would help greatly, as well.

Crowdfunding is just that--large numbers of people giving small amounts to help a campaign. One way you can help is to host a private screening party. This is really a wonderful evening, as those who have hosted such screenings will attest. If you are interested in having a screening, please contact me and I will walk you through the process. Also, if you are within driving distance of Charlotte, NC, or are up in the Washington, DC area, I would love to attend your screening!

I want to thank everyone who has supported the film and those of you who continue to do so! Your belief in our film makes ALL the difference!

All the best,
Cristina Cassidy
