Computers for Mt. Carmel Academy

Dear friends,
I am in the process of procuring computer lap tops for my classroom and for my school. I teach 9th grade World Geography at Mt. Carmel Academy, a Title I High School in the Houston Independent School District.
We have very limited computer hardware resources and I am determined to prepare my students with the skills necessary for the future, not the past.
ESRI, the leading geographical software company in the world generously licenses educational software to schools, and we are the grateful recipients of their kindness. Unfortunately besides some basic demonstrations that I projected on the screen, I have not been able to teach my students skills related to its use. This is wonderful software that teaches students to identify problems and think of solutions by finding and applying data on a map. Students learn how to create and present maps with information relevant to illustrating an issue. They also learn how to ask questions and search data. Currently we work on maps with paper and crayons.
Our students are very capable, and we are proud to have a 100% college acceptance rate, and are ranked high among Houston schools for the rate of our students who remain in college after the first year. Our school community does not have all the resources we need to prepare students with the computer skills that today’s professions require.
Please help us prepare these wonderful young people for their future.
Maura, Francesco, and I are donating the first 10 laptops for my classroom, but we need much more. We need 10 more to complete my classroom set. If there is enough interest I would like to provide 25 laptops for a computer lab where students from the entire school can work when school is over. Some of our families do not have computers at home and our students are not able to do proper research or prepare assignments using word processing software.
Our donations will have a large effect on this student body. Mt. Carmel is a small school that draws most students from the surrounding neighborhood. Each graduating class is between 85 and 100 students. The effects of the new equipment will be felt immediately and throughout the student body.
Our donations will be used for the purchase of technology hardware only and there will be no administrative costs or other costs. All funds will be used for this purpose.
The strategy is to purchase refurbished used laptops, which though priced lower than new units will still perform well for our purposes.
Any donations of usable desktops to replace teachers’ older units are also appreciated.
