Compton's Top Surgery & Medical Debt

Donation protected
This campaign started off as a way to help me afford to get top surgery. The day after my surgery, I was diagnosed with cancer. The past 2 years have been a roller coaster of intensity and expenses. I am excited to say that y'all help me to to cover three quarters of my expenses and I am so appreciative for it!  In fact, have just under $1000 (on a high interest credit card now) left to go for the top surgery!!  I keep thinking I am three months away, but then life happens. In any case, I am so close and I will be out this year (fingers crossed for May)!!

This past year, I have worked hard on paying down the debt that was accrued by picking up extra jobs and doing some freelance writing and paid reviewing. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. I just need a few months of no big expenses or more paid writing gigs.

I have never been so happy to be alive. I love my new body and the amount of love and support I have felt from my friends and community has been amazing. I will never take it for granted.  And the same for my health and surviving cancer. I am officially cured!!

I never realized how uncomfortable I was and all the noise and conflict and strife it created for me internally. Im still working out finding the words to describe it, but most essentially I feel at ease with myself and there is a peace and stillness that I come across frequently that I have never had access to before.  I think it is my body and mind relaxing...   I love my body so much and for the first time in my life I feel physically right.  Thank you, again and again.

This campaign started off as a way to help me afford to get top surgery. The day after my surgery, I was diagnosed with cancer.  The past 6 months have been a roller coaster of intensity and expenses. I was also unable to work this summer and incurred further debt from cost of living expenses.  I still owe $6200 for the top surgery.  I have also accrued some new debt related to my cancer treatment and changes in my eyes and teeth due to the chemo.  Originally, I had planned to teach multiple courses this summer in order to get out from under the strain.  However, we had to cancel the summer on campus courses due to low enrollments.  My savings was completely drained. I am currently barely making minimum payments.  When there is an added expense,... I sell things...

I now have my salary back, and have had an increase in my income. I now make as a Full Professor just below the national average of assistant professors across the country. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. I just need a few months of no big expenses.

I have never been so happy to be alive. I love my new body and the amount of love and support I have felt from my friends and community has been amazing. I will never take it for granted.  At the same time, I have never been so stressed. Mentally, it has been grueling and adapting to having a body I love, but that is sick has been difficult. My prognosis is good. My scans look to be clean and it seems I am on the road to being able to say I beat it.

Below is the original post for this campaign:

Hello, my name is D’Lane and I have never wanted breasts. For the entirety of my life, I have felt they do not belong on my body. It seems it has never been the right time to have top surgery particularly with how expensive it is and time away from work associated with it.  However, it has become imperative that I do this now. So, I’m asking for your help.

Because I am a professor, there are many misconceptions about my resources and salary. My annual income is $55,000 (my university has been frozen most of my career and in the last ten years we have not had cost of living or merit raises). Also, my insurance does not cover the surgery. In January 2019, I will be undergoing top surgery. While I am working hard to save the money, I am most concerned about accruing any more debt and because I feel that this in some way is selfish and I am taking resources away from my son.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even the smallest donation will help bring me closer to my goal. All donations will go toward the cost of the surgery and recovery expenses. Thank you so much for helping me achieve one of my life dreams.
