Community support to fight fracking

To support our community of Marlinja in the NT to have the resources to stand up for and protect the land and water that hold cultural knowledge and sacred sites in this region from fracking.
The government and the gas industry have given the community no choice but to fight this ourselves, as the NT government lifted the moratorium on fracking this time last year.
Since that time we have been protesting, lobbying, planning and continuing to stay strong in our cause to fight for the rights of our land and water.
Fracking is a highly invasive industrial operation, requiring huge volumes of chemicals and water to be used and trucked, large areas of land to be cleared for well pads and processing infrastructure.
The risks of this industry include human health, environmental degradation, the poisoning of precious water resources, damage to plants and animals and the discontinuation of cultural practices through this.
The NT government and Origin Energy are continuing to push forward with the proposed fracking, even in the face of the most intense displays of climate change over the Summer just passed. Our country is now in drought and more vulnerable than ever.
At this stage we are aware that Origin Energy have drilled 4 "exploration wells" in the Beetaloo sub-basin and within the next few months they will drill another 5 wells, to confirm whether they will go into "full production" which is an unspecified number of wells.
This has become an even greater stress and concern for the community, we are still continuing to do all that we can to prevent this from going ahead and destroying our future.
We may only be a small community but our vision and responsibility remain the same: to protect this country and other places experiencing the same threat. We have been the custodians of the earth for longer than recorded human history and we will continue to do so.
This may be a long fight for us but it is our responsibility to secure a future for our children.
Your donations and support will go towards a number of community actions and resources over the next 6 to 12 months:
1. Kudij Karrilyi- Stand Strong for country Camp in Marlinja
To set up a stronghold that represents our ongoing resistance and serves as a place to protest and plan actions in response to the current plans of the Gas Company in the coming months.
We would also like to invite other language groups to join with us in solidarity for each others struggles, as well as other allies and supporters.
We are aiming to set up the protest camp for as long as is necessary, and to be able to use it as a vigil and a visible representation of our ongoing commitment to protect this country.
Funds will go towards planning support, food, equipment, fuel and materials.
2. Legal advice and support. Funds go towards community access to take legal support as well as physical and demonstrative actions to halt the progress of exploration and production.
3. Support to gather a team of experts to work with the Community to present a case for environmental protection and to expose the specific risks that are inherent in fracking on this particular country.
Including a geologist, biologist and a water scientist.
4. In the last 12 months one of the offshoot protest projects, supported by Lock the Gate, was to write and produce a song that voices the concerns from Garrawa and Mudburrra people who both have connections to the country in the Beetaloo basin.
Local artists from Marlinja and Boroloola came together to write the song.
We would like to put some funds towards mixing, mastering and releasing the recording nation wide.
Every bit of support is appreciated, however small or large.
We need funds as of now and into the near future to stand up strong for our land, water and the future of our children.
