What is comment below?
comment below is a short play about the impact the internet has on identity and the body. Inspired by youtube celebrities and the pressure put on girls' appearances, comment below asks: what are the different identities we construct--and how does that change when you're online? This piece has been developed with the help of Skidmore College and the Stephanie Mnookin Creative Project award. This one-night production will be presented Saturday, March 18th.
Why here, why now?
comment below challenges the intense pressure women face to fit a narrow beauty ideal. As our lives become increasingly public, women face scrutiny not only from personal relationships, but the world at large. The pressure to be young, thin, and beautiful isn't new. However, when our critics are protected by the anonymity of the internet, the number of voices telling us who to be and how to look have become overwhelming. As someone who struggled with an eating disorder throughout college, I am intimately aware of the struggles depicted in this show--and I believe the only way to make a difference is by talking about it.
Where will this money be going?
All donations will go towards renting the space for a one-night only production, which will feature not only comment below but a thematically related staged reading by Brandon Bogle, another Skidmore alum. The Stephanie Mnookin award has greatly helped offset our rental costs; however, we are requesting donations to cover the remaining costs of the space and technical elements.
