Dear friends,

Colonel Aliye Cirri, one of the pioneers and veterans of Oromo resistance movement, is gravely ill and in need of our assistance.
Most of you may have heard of his name from artist Haacaaluu Hundessaa’s 2013 album in which he sings, “Aliyyii Cirriitu beekaa, isaa beekaa, karaa dhombiriin dhukaatee, way dhukaatee…” Haji Aliye Cirri, now in his late 90s, is a decorated Oromo hero, part of the 1960s generation that launched the Oromo armed struggle against the feudal Haile Selassie regime.

Born and raised in Madda Walabu, the cradle of Oromo civilization, Aliye Cirri joined the armed struggle in the early 1960s along with the late General Waqo Gutu. He spent most of his youth and adult age fighting to bring freedom and justice to the Oromo people. He was known among his contemporaries as a fierce fighter, which he proved during the Bale People’s movement, also known as the "dhombir" war. (Read more about sowra dhombir here:https://www.opride.com/2013/10/15/commemorating-50-years-of-oromo-struggle-led-by-waqo-gutu)

Aliye Cirri fought against two successive Ethiopian rulers but he also encouraged his children and family members to fight against the communist Derg regime. His towering contribution to the advancement of Oromo rights continues to inspire today’s youth. We are forever indebted to him and his contemporaries for sparking a light for liberty and for their bold sacrifices and courageous fight for justice.

We, as a nation, must learn to honor our pioneers and heroes while they are still alive. Colonel Aliye Cirri needs our immediate help. It is because of the dedication and determination of pioneers like him that we proudly and unapologetically proclaim that we are Oromo today. His family is asking the Oromo nation for help to take him to a referral hospital and to cover his medical expenses.

Your contributions, of any amount, would be greatly appreciated. We promise to transfer all the funds to his family and provide a public accounting of the transfer. Let us come together and help our hero, who gave his entire life to the cause of the Oromo nation.

Thank You!
