January 27 update . . . even though we have surpassed the $4,200 goal, the site remains active!  A special thanks to my long-time friend, Don Weatherall  for a special "off-line" contribution -- putting total donations over $5,000!

You will also note two major anonymous donors - one for $1,000 and one for $1,500.  These are from very supportive members of Rotary Club of College Park!

Thanks to all.

December 9 - Our Rotary Club just enrolled almost 50 new children to Imagination Library at the Holiday on the Drive  last week. To help cover the cost of these additional enrollments, the goal is raised to $4,200! Thanks for your support.

"Kids learn to read, then read to learn. If they don’t learn to love to read, they will never catch up."
Quote from one of our off-line donors, Les Hess.

This is about kids and reading - the foundation of learning and living!

The Short Story

Rotary Club of College Park (Orlando)  has partnered with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in providing quality, age-appropriate books to children from birth to five years of age.

A new book is mailed directly to the children every month at no cost to the parents.

Since 2012 our Rotary Club has provided almost 10,000 books to families in our designated area -- helping more than 350 kids learn the joy of reading.

As long as funds are available, kids are enrolled without asking about the income of parents.   So far, no child has been denied enrollment.

Recently we teamed up with Parramore Kidz Zone Baby Institute which serves parents in Orlando’s highest poverty neighborhood and we would like to expand that program.

There were more than 16,000 births in Orange County last year.  There are about 10,000 kids under five years of age in the zip code areas that we serve. We are barely scratching the surface. But books make an impact in the life of every child that we serve – it makes a difference to that one child!

There is so much more to be done. Our initial goal is to provide funding for an additional 100 kids for one year

Your donation of $28 will provide a book-of-the-month to one child for one year. Do the math – that’s about $2.50 per month per child. So every donation will help, whether $5, $28 or $280 or something more or in between.

The Longer Version -- the Bigger Picture!

Rotary Club of College Park Imagines . . . The Imagination Station Vision

In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort. Dolly's vision was to foster a love of reading among preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.

Making A Difference

Dolly’s Imagination Library has became so popular that since the initial program launched in the United States, the Imagination Library has gone from just a few dozen books to more than 100,000,000 books mailed to children in the United States, Canada, Australia and across the proverbial pond into the United Kingdom! Statistics and independent reports have shown Dolly Parton's Imagination Library drastically improves early childhood literacy for children enrolled in the program. Further studies have shown improved scores during early literacy testing.

Supported by Rotary International

Dolly was a speaker at the 2010 Rotary International Convention in Montréal, Québec, Canada, where she received the Paul Harris Fellow Recognition and shared her appreciation for Rotary's efforts to promote literacy. Rotary International and the Dollywood Foundation's Imagination Library are collaborating to promote early childhood reading.   Rotary Club of College Park is proud to be an affiliate in the program.

Moving Forward with Rotary Club of College Park - A Little Engine That Can!

Rotary Club of College Park became an affiliate with the Dollywood Foundation in 2012 and since that time has distributed almost 10,000 books to more than 350 kids in the area – at no cost to the parents! There is simply no limit on how far we can take this program, but it is an absolute impossibility without financial help. We primarily serve zip codes 32801, 32804, 32805, 32808 and 32810. There are thousands of eligible children in those areas but with available financial resources we are able to serve only a few of them.  At this time our Club’s funding is provided primarily from some of the proceeds of the Club’s annual Taste of College Park.   No other organization in Central Florida is sponsoring this proven early childhood literacy program at this time.

The signature book in Imagination Library is "The Little Engine that Could."    We are a club of only about 30 members.   But like The Little Engine . . . "We think we can  . . .  We think we can  . . .  and with your help  . . . we KNOW we can!"

Mission: To deliver new, hard back books monthly to homes of the children in our selected  areas  thereby promoting experiences with language and reading, and establishing the basis for future learning success.

Vision: All pre-school children (Ages birth-5) in our area of influence will arrive at Kindergarten's door ready and able to succeed with the help of Imagination Library.   (Subject, of course, to funding!)

We invite you to share in that vision!
