Colby and Jen's IVF Fund

From Colby and Jen:
While telling our story is painful, we have also found that sharing our pain with friends and family has helped to reinforce the support and guidance we needed to move forward through our journey of infertility.

We wanted to spend our first year of marriage creating a solid foundation before starting our little family. We dreamed of 2… 3… 4 kids! We never dreamed that we would have trouble getting pregnant once we were ready.

First, we jumped the hurdle of Jen’s chronic pain. The medication she was taking would be unsafe for a growing baby. In anticipation of quick success, Jen went off of all her pain management medication two years ago and has been struggling with daily pain as we continue to dream about our baby.

On New Years Day 2017, we had a positive pregnancy test. We had all of the joy and excitement of any first-time parent. We immediately began thinking about how our life would change and taking bets on boy or girl. Excitedly, we walked into our first ultrasound appointment to see our baby for the first time. We knew right away that something was wrong and moments into the appointment with sadness on her face, the tech called in the doctor. We had lost our baby one week earlier.

They told us that this happened and we could begin trying immediately for another pregnancy. We took some time to grieve but soon we were pregnant again. This time we looked at the positive test with caution and reserve. The pain of our miscarriage was heavy on our hearts. So, we walked into that same room, with the same tech and before the exam began, Jen burst into tears. And again, the tech called in the doctor and we learned that we had lost our baby one week earlier.

It was time for us to visit an infertility specialist. With the determination to find out the cause of our miscarriages, we had every test possible to investigate the recurrent losses. SO. MANY. TESTS. We didn’t find an answer for the recurrent loss, however, Jen’s tests returned a diagnosis of Diminished Ovarian Reserve. Her test results came back similar to someone in their late 40s (she was 29!). One of the hardest experiences during this process has been to see the panic in the doctor’s eyes once they view the AMH levels (an indicator of egg reserve) even though they try to hide it.

We have done many months of lesser interventions with no lasting success. By the end of 2018, our chance for a family could be gone.

Our only option now is IVF. Due to the diminished egg reserve, we will need to do multiple rounds of egg retrievals in order to ensure we have enough for one transfer. The cost is prohibitive for us, especially after the costs we have already incurred. It is very scary to think what this financial burden would do to us and the opportunities it steals from our future family if we have to endure the cost alone.

Jen’s fibromyalgia, it makes it very hard for her to work full-time. She works part-time at our local church but often must work remotely as a result of her severe symptoms. Colby works full-time for the federal government. Due to our financial situation, he has taken a position with 12-hour shifts, which swings between days and night shifts. This schedule is has been difficult for him emotionally and physically but is necessary for us to even have a shot and raising enough for IVF.

We are at a turning point in our journey. Together we have prayed and questioned. We realized that is impossible for us to continue holding this burden. We would never move forward without outside help. We can’t make it through this alone and we don’t want to hide in our pain anymore. We are reaching to you as our family and friends to ask for help.

Please consider blessing us with the opportunity to create a family.

Our continued love, Colby and Jen
