Code Hawk Camp is a free, week-long summer camp in South LA where students learn how to program and think like computer scientists. For many of these students, Code Hawk Camp is the only opportunity they will have to experience a summer enrichment program like this, as these kinds of camps usually cost thousands of dollars.

Now in its third year, Code Hawk Camp has nearly tripled in enrollment since its first summer of 20 students! In order to be able to support this growth in enrollment, we are asking our friends and family to help support us with any small amount they can give. Past years of camp have been funded out of pocket by the founder of camp (Nancy), but this has become unsustainable in the face of the uptick in enrollment. We recognize that crowdfunding is not a long-term or sustainable solution, either, and are working to secure more reliable funding streams to better support future camps, but in this third transitional year, we have found ourselves needing just a little bit of extra help. While the costs to run camp are kept low (all instructors are volunteers and facilities are provided by the school), a small operating budget is still required to provide students with learning materials and food during the week.

It costs about $50 to support each student for the full week.  This cost covers food, notebooks, pens, and other classroom materials.  Comparable computer science camps in the LA area charge about $3000 per child and often require students to bring their own equipment.

Programs like Code Hawk Camp are vital to resolving the massive inequities currently present within the tech industry. We have seen first hand how students emerge from a week at camp feeling more confident and curious in their abilities to use technology to express themselves and create amazing things. Several students have reported an interest in majoring in computer science as a result of camp, and one camper says the last two summers have prepared her to be academically competitive as the only female computer science major at her school.

Please consider how a few dollars can make a huge impact on a student’s life.

Hey everyone, we reached our goal in just two days!! Here's a message from the founder of Code Hawk Camp, Nancy Se (who is currently in Houston, TX working with other educators on how to increase equitable participation in CS education):

"I am floored by all the friends and family who have donated so far. We appreciate this support so much.

Now that we have reached our initial goal, we are hoping to raise additional funds to be able to purchase Raspberry Pi kits for our students to continue learning at home. (Many of our students do not have access to a working computer at home, which puts them at a severe disadvantage to continue practicing their skills at home. A Raspberry Pi is a low-cost open-source controller that can be used to learn how to program, access the internet, and control electronic components.)

I am grateful. So very grateful. I can't wait to tell the students what you have all done for them."

A huge thanks to everyone who has donated and shared our campaign!

For every $40 we are able to raise beyond our goal, we will be able to equip a student with a Raspberry Pi that they can take home to continue practice the craft of programming. Not having access to a computer at home is often a major hurdle that many students in low-income communities face. We want to provide our students with not just educational access but also the tools needed to become 21st century innovators and leaders.
