Who is Ouk Vanday?
Vanday came from Battambang province, Cambodia. He left a well paying job as the General Manager at a well established hotel in Kampong Thom province in order to give back to the community and change the lives of many impoverished children.
What is the Coconut School?
Vanday was inspired to build the first Coconut School when he visited Koh Dach where garbage littered the community and children grow up without clothes or a proper education. He uses his passion for design, ingenuity, and creative spirit to change many lives and turn rubbish into functioning pieces of art. The school was built out of recycled material. For example, walls of the school are made out of recycled beer bottles, chairs are cut from local coconut trees, and tables are supported by old motorcycle wheels.
What is the Coconut School trying to accomplish?
Vanday believes children are the future. In 15 to 20 years, these same children will be leading their communities. As a result, the Coconut School was founded with the following goals in mind:
- First, the Coconut School is committed to helping children fight poverty by building its school in a location that is tough to commute to and from. He had built the first location on an island, the second will be on Kirirom Mountain and in the future Vanday hope to build the third school along the tonle sap lake.
- Second, the Coconut School attempts to teach English and computer skills to assist children in finding a job easily in a country dominated by tourism.
- Third, the Coconut School teaches children about recycling, cleaning up the community, breaking the cycle of burning garbage that leads to the depletion of the ozone layer, and reducing the contamination of drinking water caused by garbage buried in landfills.
How can you help?
For nearly three years, Vanday has accomplished much of this on his own. His perseverance has impacted over 200 students’ lives.
