Moms Flooded Home
Donation protected
My name is Jon Hume. I am writing this on behalf of my sister, Robin Hume Chestnas and our family. This home belongs to my mom, Shirley. She has lived here since 1959 (my dad passed in 1999). The Flood of 2015 exceeded forecasts and was higher than anyone ever thought it could get. Based on projected levels last Tuesday, we moved everything out of her basement up into the first floor level, thinking her home would be safe. The 2015 flood shattered the 1982 record flood by more than 6 feet. My moms home was inundated with flood water completely filling up the basement, and more than1 foot of water on her main living level. A majority of her possessions, accumulated over more than a half century, are unsalvageable. The home is going to need major work to make it liveable again. Everything from about 36" high and down will need to be replaced. Plaster walls, insulation, flooring, cabinets, furniture, appliances, clothing...you name it. Flood insurance jumped to over $2000 per year in addition to regular homeowners insurance. Being 81, on a fixed income and with never having been flooded in over 50 years she chose to drop her flood insurance a couple years ago. Now she is left with the financial burden of having to repair her home and replace her belongings with out any insurance assistance. We are asking for help. Any and all money donated will go directly to my mom to help defray the enormous cost.
My mom and dad bought this house in 1959, and my mom does not want to live anywhere else. This was more than her home. It was her and dads dream, her sanctuary, her life. She has always wanted to live out her life here, and we want to help her achieve that.
Thank you for reading, and thank you, sincerely, for any donation.
