Climb for Congo/Klim voor Congo

9 years ago, my husband and I exchanged Belgium for DR Congo to help children in need. I remember well the first 13 kids that came 1/month to our backyard for a hot meal, games, homework assistance and Bible stories.


Today those kids are still part of our program. One of them recently finished her studies and is soon to 'officially' say good bye to us. Very encouraging!

What started 9 years ago, grew in to 4 sites welcoming 50 children each Monday to Saturday. Children ages 4 to 9 can be recruited based on their vulnerability. We only work with the poorest of the poor, meaning: no acces to school, no acces to health care, less then 2 meals a day, extra vulnerable due to HIV in the family, being orphaned, abuse, neglect, ... 

We set up 'Ministry CarePoints' in the poorest areas of Kinshasa. A Ministry CarePoint recruits 50 children as described above.


We put them in a nearby school so that education is assured. After school, they walk to our Ministry site for a 4h program including things like: a hot meal, medical attention, life-skills, the Word of God, tutoring and homework assistance, trauma counselling, games, art and much more. All is paid for by our organisation through donations. 

The best thing is that the children get to stay in their families. Over 60% of our children are orphaned. Most of them live with a grandmother, a neigbor, an aunt, that cannot afford taking care of them. Through the Ministry CarePoint, the children get the support they need to grow and develop, while they get to stay in their family, within their communities. Through a Ministry CarePoint, a child gets the change to brake the cycle of poverty, AIDS, stigma, and much more and live a stable, healthy and God-honouring life as an adult. 

As you know, all of this needs funding. As part of our funding channels, all our children have individual sponsors, who give us about 35€/month. While we are very grateful for that, this only represents a part of our total cost. Every month, we need another 65€ per child to cover all costs. To raise that money we constantly do a variety of things. Individuals, companies, churches, ... are all jumping in making this Ministry financially possible. We also organise special events and fundraisers as part of this monthly 'gap' of funds we need. 

One of our friends in Belgium came with the idea of getting people to sponsor him to climb the highest mountain in Africa. All sponsormoney he committed to send to us in Congo so we could continue caring for the 200 children currently in our care. It's one of those special fundraisers to help fund the overall financial need. 

When I heard about it, I immidiately felt I wanted to join him. It ended up growing into an event open to anybody and today, we are about 10 people taking on this adventure. Check out the who, what, where on our website. 

While my husband is the one to speak at chuches, meet with donors, write funding proposals, ... I want to help by climbing a mountain in August 2018!

I want to donate 5000€ as sponsormoney to our Ministry in Congo. On top of this, I need 4000€ to fund the trip itself (airline tickets, visa's, climb-equiment, 11 days travel, ...). I would love for you to go and climb with me as the more people climb to the summit of Kilimanjaro being sponsored to do so, the more funds we get in DRC to pull children out of the valley of poverty and hopelessness. 

If climbing a week to over 5000m altitude is not your thing, maybe you want to consider making it possible for me to do so on your behalf? If a large enough team of friends come together and each gives what he/she wants/can, I know we can do this! What do you say?

9 jaar terug ruilden mijn man en mezelf België voor DR Congo om kinderen in nood te helpen. Ik herinner me nog goed hoe we de allereerste groep van 13 kinderen éénmaal per maand in onze achtertuin verwelkomden en een ganse namiddag vulden met een warme maaltijd, spelen, Bijbellessen, en veel meer. Deze kinderen maken nog steeds deel uit van het programma en ééntje ervan, die haar studies afrondde zal binnenkort 'officieel' afscheid van ons nemen. Een geuse bemoediging!

Ondertussen is Christ's Hope Int. in Congo uitgegroeid tot 4 ZorgPunten met 50 kinderen elk. Onze kinderen worden gerekruteerd tussen 4 en 9 jaar jong en blijven in ons programma tot ze volwassen zijn en klaar om zelfstandig te leven. Ze blijven in hun families leven maar dankzij onze 'ZorgPunten' kunnen ze naar school en komen ze meermaals per week na school naar ons programma (ZorgPunt) waar ze een warme maaltijd krijgen, hulp bij huiswerk, alfabetisering waar nodig, medische opvolging, God's woord horen en sociaal met elkaar en anderen leren omgaan dankzij de vele spelen, knutselwerken, groepsgesprekken, ... 

Al onze kinderen hebben een sponsor die ons ongeveer 35€/maand stuurt om de kosten van dit werk mogelijk te maken. Dit is echter niet voldoende om alle kosten te dekken en dus is er elke maand extra geld nodig. Hier komt 'Climb for Hope'  in het verhaal.

Goede vrienden uit België kwamen op de idee om de Kilimanjaro te beklimmen en zich daarbij te laten sponsoren. Ze bekostigen zelf de reis en sturen al het sponsorgeld naar Congo. Toen ik hiervan hoorde sprak dit me onmiddellijk aan. Mijn man is degene die spreekbeurten doet, kerken toespreekt, ... maar dat is niet zo mijn ding. Een berg beklimmen ligt me veel beter en als ik op die manier mag helpen om fondsen te verzamelen doe ik dat zeer graag. Dankzij deze klim en de 5000€ sponsorgeld dat elke deelnemer voor Congo verzamelt, kan het werk weer een tijd verder! Een 'climb' die 'hope' geeft dus!

Door mij te steunen help je me de kosten van de reis (4000€) en het sponsorgeld (5000€) bijeen te krijgen. Hierdoor kunnen we blijven omzien naar 200 kinderen in Kinshasa en dat op dagelijkse basis. Kinderen die zonder ons programma geen enkele hoop op een toekomst hebben. 

Dankzij uw steun, kan ik op mijn manier bijdragen aan de vele fondsen die elke maand opnieuw nodig zijn. 

De beklimming gaat door in August 2018. Ik moet zo'n 500€ aan uitrusting aanschaffen en zo vroeg mogelijk vliegtickets aanschaffen om van redelijke prijzen te kunnen genieten. Hoe eerder ik 2000€ bij elkaar heb, hoe sneller ik die eerste kosten kan maken.
