Climb against Cancer (for Jade)

Hi, I’m Gary Whiston and work for Barclays bank, based in Canary Wharf, London.
Whilst I wear a suit to work these days, I haven’t always been in banking and I, like a number of my colleagues, started my career in the military.
I served with the Royal Marines Commandos, and then in Army and Navy Reserve units, for 12 years, including multiple tours of Afghanistan.
Jade, My Sister-in-Law
Those that have served will know that, whilst it can be incredibly rewarding, the job isn’t possible without the support of friends and family.
Much of that support came from my sister in law – Jade Baldwin.
I’ve known Jade since she started dating my brother in 2006 and she would regularly send me care packages, when I was deployed, or call to see how I was doing.
Jade is just 35, and has been diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Unfortunately, she has all but exhausted the treatments available on the NHS.
However, her doctor is very hopeful that a new treatment will be able to help her.
Sadly, the new treatment is not available for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on the NHS and she will need to find the funding for this.

3 Peaks Challenge
Jade helped me so much and I want to return her years of support.
I’m taking on a challenge, to raise money for Jade, tackling a ‘virtual’ National 3 Peaks Challenge.
The Three Peaks Challenge requires climbing 3064 metres over the three highest mountains of England, Wales and Scotland.
· Scafell Pike, England - which equals 6,180 stair steps
· Mount Snowdon, Wales - which equals 7,120 stair steps
· Ben Nevis, Scotland - which equals 8,810 stair steps
On Tuesday 9th October I am planning to complete the 22110 steps as well as the same number in the descent, at the Barclays HQ in London.
This means climbing the stairs from the lobby to Level 31 over 25 times over 10 hours!
To add to the challenge, I will be carrying a backpack weighing 30kg, which is the weight I would have carried during my military days.
