Clean Cooking Now

UPDATE: *This platform is now pivoting to funding induction-ready pots.* With IKEA's imminent donation of 500 induction cooktops, we want to be giving people an amazing cooking tool they can use right away, like a bike WITH pedals. While most people already have one or two pots and pans that have the magnet-attracting base, many don't, especially, we've found, the lowest income households. Your donation will purchase the most versatile single piece of cookware a 5-6 quart stainless steel lidded soup pot that can be used to fry stuff, make soups, and most crucially heat water for bathing.

ORIGINAL STORY (still true!):
People are back in homes with electricity but no gas - so they can't cook hot meals.  It's going to take several weeks before gas will be restored, up to 2 months by some estimates. Cheap & fast electric induction cooktops cost $30-$50 and will provide immediate relief for families. THANK YOU!!!

Our collective work on Clean Cooking Now took a big leap on Friday when IKEA delivered 504 donated Tillreda Cooktops to the Merrimack Valley! This shipment is a separate, bonus donation from the previously delivered 176 cooktops and >90 induction-compatible pots funded & delivered by this GoFundMe.
Huge thanks to Ikea for coming through for hundreds of distressed families, and to the powerhouse HEET & Mothers Out Front combo for their brains, heart, and muscle power from procuring to delivering the goods!
And for crucial guidance & people power of the Merrimack Valley Project and the UU North Andover for getting the cooktops and pots into households in need.
Our GoFundMe has been supplemented by two generous personal checks totaling $2500, which puts this fund at >$14k!!! This will allow us to provide at least one pot for every one of the 676 cooktops that our Gas Leak Allies combined efforts have brought to the affected communities. The need is still enormous given that over 8000 homes are still without gas, and we've heard that many families either did not get a hot plate, or that the hot plates are not working out. We are so grateful for your support!

Hi all, (para español ver abajo)

We have delivered ALL 177 induction cooktops as of yesterday!!! And keep reading to the end to find out about how HEET & Mothers Out Front is taking this initiative to a whole new level.

Yesterday I had the honor of making community rounds with Ana Javier, President of the Merrimack Valley Project, to make placements at crucial community service centers including the Lawrence Methuen Community Coalition which serves families and youth with special needs who are in a most vulnerable situation during this crisis.

A highlight of the morning was our placement of an induction cooktop into a South Lawrence Bodega! In doing so we learned something very crucial to bringing small food establishments back in business: the owners told us that with no hot tap water, they are prohibited from serving customers. So they were restricted to putting the cooktop into the employee lunchroom for now. The Lawrence Department of Health and MA Dept of Public Health can hopefully clear the way with temporary measures to allow food establishments to serve customers since the cooktops can deliver hot water. If food trucks can operate without dedicated water pipes, so can brick & mortar mom & pop bodegas.

Below is our current budget with income and expenditures. Note that we bought about $500 worth of pots and pans - we are finding a great need for induction-compatible pots and pans (which are also free from carcinogenic non-stick coatings), and this platform will now turn to spending itself out or any new donations on induction-compatible pots. We learned that the single best pot, if you could have only one, is a big soup pot, about 1.5 gallons for the size of our portable units. You can cook a soup, fry stuff (even though in normal conditions you'd choose a skillet), and most crucially, heat water to give your kids a bath.

OK, now for the most exciting news of all: the fabulous folks over at HEET managed to get IKEA to DONATE 500 Tillreda Induction Cooktops!!! They are being shipped sometime this weekend or Monday, and we'll continue to work closely with the wonderful folks at the Merrimack Valley Project and its partner organizations to get these into the most needing households as soon as possible.

THANK YOU ALL for being there for people in their time of urgent need, which is growing by the day.

Hi all, (para español ver abajo)
I delivered another batch of 46 Ikea Tillreda portable induction cooktops to the excellent grassroots community advocates at the Merrimack Valley Project (MVP). The inspiring faith leader and community advocate Ana Javier along with Trevor LaFauci at the MVP are in the best position to place these into the homes of those who need them most.
That brings our total delivery into the community of 166 cooktops! And we're not done yet! For whatever reason, Ikea shorted us on our order, so they still owe us 8 units, which we will promptly get into the community as soon as we get them.
I'm going to check the balance sheet tomorrow, being confident that we are in the black and can devote any remaining funds to even more cooktops! Thank you for your incredibly kind support.

¡Y aún no hemos terminado!

I want to state the flip side of the economic issue of higher usage costs of electricity impacting economically disadvantaged. If nothing is done for sure there will be harsher impact for those less able to pay. But it is the definition of energy/environmental injustice if economically disadvantaged residents must choose a dirtier energy solution than those who can afford to pay higher rates. The responsibility is on Columbia Gas and the DPU to make it such that EVERYONE has the right to choose a reasonable permanent heating solution to a disaster foisted on them through no fault of their own. The AGO should be on this issue to protect choices for economically disadvantaged today. Otherwise we're going to see lots of minisplits & built in induction stoves in more affluent neighborhoods and oil burners or propane, or displacement and medical emergencies, in disavantaged environmental justice communities.
