Help Cindie Hummer with Medical Expenses

Donation protected
At 7:57pm on January 31st, 2019, my Mom texted my Dad:  she was on her way home from a Lion’s Club meeting, usually a 10 minute drive from my parents home.  They live and work on a small island and texting Dad gave him enough time to get the boat to the dock in order pick her up and take her home.  He waited. She didn’t arrive.  But he heard the sirens.

No one will know exactly what happened that night.  It was dark. It had rained. An eye witness said they saw her truck roll at least two times.  Spared from being rolled over by the truck or even blunt force from a battering inside the rolling truck, Mom was brutally thrown onto the harsh road surface and landed about 30 feet away.

Unconscious, unresponsive, bruised and battered, she was rushed to the closest emergency facility in Naples where Dad rushed to meet her. Initial CT scans were positive: no internal injuries or broken bones- a relief of sorts, but it was obvious her small framed body had suffered major injuries.  Later that night, she went by ambulance to the Trauma ICU in Fort Myers with a breathing tube, IV, medications etc and was stabilized. Upon regaining consciousness, a day later, with a neck brace, breathing and feeding tubes and IV, her first recognition was of my Dad’s face. But a full MRI revealed four compression fractures of her neck vertebrae: C7, T1, T2 and T4 including cervical ligamentous injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, cognitive deficit and severe concussion.

In the days that followed, she has moved to a Rehabilitation Center, her bruises have faded, scabs from cuts and scrapes are gone from her face and back, she can eat and breath on her own and her left side is slowly regaining movement and strength. Unfortunately, though, her healing cannot be measured by such milestones.

My Mom’s brain suffered severe trauma in the accident.  Her ability to speak and even her sense of humor is slowly returning, but her words get scrambled and her thoughts are confused.  Mom recognizes faces with a smile but her eyes dart for my Dad’s approval as she says a name.  She struggles when asked what day it is or where she is. She has no recollection of the accident or even why she is in a hospital.  She needs reassurance.  She worries about her family, her friends and her island where she works, but she has trouble putting those worries into words with complete thoughts and sentences.

My Mom is Cindie Hummer. She and my Dad, Brian, are the first to help in any cause for their community, friends, and even strangers. My Mom’s love for my Dad, our family, her beloved dog Buddy, her friends, and her community is beyond measure.

We are asking you to help support my parents with the immense medical expenses that are adding up. Your donation can help ease their financial strain and allow both my parents to focus on my Mom’s full recovery.

The Island is my Mom’s love. But she is the Island’s heart. You can help heal that heart.

Thank you for your attention and support.
